Around the Walls: Mountain Biking the Avalanche Barriers of Ísafjörður
A beginner-friendly ride through fortified walls, forest trails, and fjord panoramas above one of Iceland's most remote towns.
This mountain biking tour in Ísafjörður takes riders along the avalanche barriers that guard the town from the steep mountain slopes rising directly above it. In roughly two and a half hours, cyclists of all experience levels can explore a route that blends infrastructure, wilderness, and local history into a single memorable outing.
Ísafjörður is one of the few towns in Iceland where protective avalanche walls are a permanent feature of the urban landscape. Built to shield residential streets from winter slides, these concrete barriers take on a different character in summer, when they become an unexpected backdrop for outdoor adventure.
The route moves through several distinct environments, from the main town road to hidden forest paths in Tungudalur and open valley trails with sweeping views across the fjord. Guides share the stories behind the structures and the settlement, adding context to what you see along the way.

Tour Itinerary
The tour begins at the operator's base camp in Mávagarður, where bikes are stored and equipment is distributed. After a brief introduction covering the route and basic bike handling, the group sets off along Aðalstræti, the main road of Ísafjörður.
Riders climb toward the mountains and ascend the first steep slope leading to the avalanche barrier behind the residential street of Urðarvegur. The group navigates behind the towering walls before emerging back onto the road.
A second, structurally different barrier is encountered further along the route. After crossing it, the trail leads into the Tungudalur valley forest, where the Buná river and its waterfall provide a natural resting point.
The route continues across the valley toward the final avalanche wall. A short, moderately steep climb to the top rewards riders with an open view over the fjord and the landscape below.
From the final viewpoint, the trail descends on an easy path back into Ísafjörður, completing the loop at the starting point in Mávagarður.
