Whale Watching in Ísafjarðardjúp
A guided journey into one of Iceland's most wildlife-rich fjords, in search of whales, seabirds, and marine life.
Set out from the harbour town of Ísafjörður aboard the fully equipped vessel Síf for a whale watching tour in Ísafjarðardjúp — a sweeping fjord system in the Westfjords known for its exceptional concentration of marine wildlife. Expert crew and a knowledgeable guide accompany every departure, offering both discovery and contribution to ongoing local research.
The fjord shelters populations of humpback and minke whales throughout the season. Humpbacks are a particular highlight: they frequently raise their flukes before diving, offering one of the most striking sights in wildlife observation. Dolphins and harbour porpoises are also regularly spotted moving through the area.
Seabird life adds another dimension to the experience. Puffins nest in large numbers on the nearby islands of Vigur and Æðey, and their presence on the water is a near-constant companion during the voyage. On rare occasions, orca pods have also been recorded transiting the fjord.

How the Tour Unfolds
Guests gather at the vessel Síf, moored opposite the Borea gear storage on Mávagarður in Ísafjörður. The guide and crew will be present to welcome everyone and provide a safety briefing before departure.
The boat heads out into the broad fjord, where the crew begins scanning for whale blows and signs of surface activity. The guide shares background on local wildlife, the fjord's ecology, and the ongoing research programme.
When whales are located, the captain manoeuvres the vessel carefully to allow close observation without disturbing the animals. Guests are encouraged to photograph flukes and other identifying features to support population research.
Throughout the journey, the guide points out puffins, dolphins, and harbour porpoises. The islands of Vigur and Æðey serve as backdrop to much of the birdlife encountered along the route.
After approximately two hours exploring the fjord, the vessel returns to the mooring at Mávagarður. The full excursion from departure to return takes around two hours and thirty minutes.
