Mount Vesuvius Tour with Entry Ticket and Lunch
Climb one of Europe's most iconic active volcanoes, taste the legendary wines of its slopes, and discover why this landscape has captivated the world for centuries.
A Mount Vesuvius tour combines a guided ascent to the crater of one of only two active volcanoes in Continental Europe with a traditional Italian lunch and wine tasting at a local vineyard nestled within the National Park. Standing approximately 1,281 meters tall, Vesuvius dominates the Bay of Naples with a symmetrical cone and forested slopes that conceal an extraordinarily productive agricultural territory. This tour offers a rare opportunity to experience the mountain from both its geological and culinary dimensions.
The Mount Vesuvius National Park, officially established on 5 June 1995, was created to protect the area's exceptional natural heritage, including rare animal and plant species, geological singularities, paleontological formations, and the unique hydraulic and ecological balances of the Vesuvian territory. The park encompasses a mosaic of small farms and wineries cultivating heirloom grape varietals that thrive in the volcanic soil, producing wines with a character found nowhere else on earth. Visitors moving through the park encounter a landscape shaped simultaneously by centuries of eruption and millennia of human cultivation.
Volcanologically, Vesuvius is classified as a polygenic and mixed volcano, composed of lava of varying chemical compositions including trachyte, tephrites, and leucitites, formed through both lava flows and pyroclastic deposits. It consists of an outer cone known as Monte Somma and an inner cone separated by the Valle del Gigante, a remnant of the ancient caldera within which the Great Cone formed during the catastrophic eruption of 79 AD. This layered geological history makes every step of the ascent a walk through deep time.
The wine stop is at Sorrentino Vini, founded in 1990 by Paolo Sorrentino, currently the largest estate on Vesuvius with 35 hectares of property entirely within the National Park. The estate produces Lacryma Christi, the only DOC wine with Controlled Designation of Origin produced on the slopes of Vesuvius, offering a taste that is inseparable from the volcanic terroir surrounding it. The light lunch served here provides an authentic introduction to the culinary traditions of the Vesuvian countryside before the ascent to the crater begins.

Itinerary
The tour begins with a pickup and transfer from your chosen departure point, either Sorrento or Naples. The route heads toward the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, passing through the distinctive Vesuvian landscape of small farms and vineyards that characterize the lower flanks of the volcano.
The first stop is at Sorrentino Vini, a 35-hectare estate founded in 1990 and the largest vineyard within the Mount Vesuvius National Park. Guests enjoy a glass of Lacryma Christi DOC wine alongside a traditional Italian light lunch, providing an introduction to the agricultural heritage of the volcanic territory.
After lunch, the group transfers to the access point for the crater trail within the National Park. The surrounding landscape of Monte Somma and the Valle del Gigante becomes visible as the elevation increases, offering context for the volcano's complex geological structure.
Guests spend approximately two hours exploring the crater area, walking the official path to the rim to observe the interior of the volcano and the panoramic views across the Bay of Naples and the surrounding Campanian plain. A guide provides context on the eruption of 79 AD, the formation of the inner cone, and the park's ongoing conservation mission.
Following the crater visit, guests board the vehicle for the return journey to the original departure point. The transfer concludes the tour, approximately seven hours after the initial departure.
