Merzouga & Rissani 4x4 Desert Tour: Dunes, Mines & Nomad Life
A half-morning journey through hidden villages, ancient mines, and the living edge of the Sahara.
This Merzouga 4x4 desert excursion takes you beyond the standard dune views and into the lesser-known corners of the Erg Chebbi region. In just three hours, you cover a seasonal lake, a culturally rich village, abandoned mining settlements, and a nomad camp.
The route is designed for travelers who want authentic encounters rather than curated spectacles. Each stop connects you to a different layer of the Saharan landscape, from the geological to the human.
The terrain is accessible and the pace is relaxed, making this outing suitable for a wide range of visitors including families and those with limited desert experience.

Itinerary
Your tour begins in Merzouga with pickup from your accommodation. The first stop is the seasonal lake, a shallow body of water that appears at the edge of the dunes depending on rainfall and season. When present, the lake attracts migratory flamingos and offers a striking contrast to the surrounding sand.
The route continues to Khamlia, a small village known for its community of Gnawa musicians descended from sub-Saharan populations. You may choose to listen to a performance and join locals for mint tea. Note that a tip for the musicians is expected if you attend a session, or you may skip this stop and proceed directly to the mines.
The 4WD crosses to the far side of the Erg Chebbi dunes to reach Mefes, a largely abandoned settlement built around mineral extraction. The mines here produced lead, zinc, and iron ore during and after the French colonial era. The site has a raw, industrial character that contrasts sharply with the surrounding desert.
The final stop brings you to a nomad encampment where Berber families maintain a semi-nomadic way of life in traditional goat-hair tents along the dune edge. This is an opportunity to observe and interact with a community whose customs have remained largely unchanged across generations.
The excursion concludes with a return transfer to Merzouga. Drop-off is flexible and can be arranged at your hotel or any other preferred location within the town.
