Your guide collects you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza and travels with you to the Citadel of Saladin. This medieval fortress, built in the 12th century, sits on a limestone spur of the Muqattam Hills and offers a commanding overview of the city before you descend into its streets.

Inside the Citadel, you visit the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, built in the Ottoman style in the 19th century. Its alabaster-clad walls, central dome, and twin minarets make it one of the most recognizable structures on the Cairo skyline. The terrace provides panoramic views across the entire city.

You continue to Al-Azhar Mosque, founded in 970 CE and recognized as one of the oldest mosques in the Islamic world. The mosque blends Fatimid, Mamluk, and Ottoman architectural elements accumulated across its long history. Its peaceful courtyards and scholarly atmosphere set it apart from any purely ceremonial religious site.

From Al-Azhar, you enter the famous bazaar of Khan El Khalili, which has operated as a commercial center since the 14th century. Narrow alleys lead past workshops, stalls, and historic cafes selling handmade silver, spices, textiles, perfumes, and decorative crafts. It is an immersive portrait of traditional urban commerce that remains very much alive.

You walk along Al-Muizz Street, one of the oldest thoroughfares in Cairo and considered the largest open-air museum in the city. The street is lined with intact monuments from the Fatimid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods. At its northern end, the ancient gate of Bab al-Futuh stands as one of the remaining medieval entrances to the old Fatimid city.

Before returning to your hotel, there is an optional stop for lunch in the area, giving you the chance to try local Egyptian dishes in a traditional setting. Your guide then accompanies you back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza, concluding the tour.
