Cosenza: Art and Flavours, History and Legends
Step inside the little Athens of Calabria and discover a city where ancient Bruzi roots, medieval streets, and open-air masterpieces converge.
A guided tour of Cosenza reveals one of southern Italy's most underrated cultural capitals, layering millennia of Bruzi, Norman, and Swabian heritage onto a compact and walkable historic centre. The journey moves from a contemporary open-air museum to a Romanesque cathedral, a Dominican cloister, and a hilltop fortress, before concluding with a traditional Calabrian lunch.
Cosenza was founded in the fourth century BC by the Bruzi people and later became a key crossroads of Mediterranean civilisation. Its nickname, the Athens of Calabria, was earned through centuries of philosophical debate, literary tradition, and artistic patronage that left visible marks on every corner of the old town.
The tour combines structured commentary with unhurried exploration of the historic quarters, allowing visitors to absorb the atmosphere of narrow medieval lanes and baroque piazzas without feeling rushed. A seated meal in a local trattoria, based on traditional Calabrian recipes and seasonal products, provides a fitting close to the experience.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the MAB, an open-air museum on Corso Mazzini displaying works by Dali, De Chirico, Modigliani, and Manzù among others.

Sit down to a complete traditional lunch in a local trattoria, sampling authentic Calabrian dishes made from locally sourced ingredients.
Itinerary
The tour begins at Piazza Bilotti, the gateway to Corso Mazzini and the MAB, Museo all'Aperto di Bilotti. This remarkable open-air collection features sculptures and installations by Salvador Dali, Giorgio De Chirico, Amedeo Modigliani, Pietro Cascella, Giacomo Manzù, and Mimmo Rotella, displayed along a pedestrianised boulevard in the heart of the modern city.
From the MAB, the route continues to Piazza dei Bruzi, named in honour of the ancient Italic people who founded the city. The group then enters Cosenza Vecchia, the medieval borough, following Corso Telesio through its layered historic streetscape toward the heart of the old town.
The visit to the Church and Cloister of San Domenico is followed by a walk to Piazza Valdesi and the Cathedral of Cosenza, one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Calabria. The Teatro Rendano and the surrounding Piazza Grande provide further context for the city's rich cultural life across different centuries.
The walking route ascends to the foot of the Castello Svevo-Normanno, the imposing fortress that has watched over Cosenza since the Norman period. The castle sits at the confluence of the Crati and Busento rivers, the latter historically associated with the legendary burial site of Visigoth king Alaric.
The tour concludes with a full sit-down lunch in one of the historic quarter's traditional trattorie, offering a curated selection of Calabrian dishes prepared with regional products. Beverages are not included in the price of the meal.
