Capanne di Marcarolo Park: Hiking on Mount Tobbio
A challenging loop trail through wild Ligurian-Piedmontese landscapes, with history written into every switchback.
This guided hike on Mount Tobbio takes you deep into the Capanne di Marcarolo Nature Park, one of the most preserved natural areas on the border between Liguria and Piedmont. Starting from the village of Voltaggio, you will follow a loop trail of 14 km with a 900 m elevation gain, reaching the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Caravaggio at 1,092 m above sea level.
The route winds through dense forests, open ridgelines and rocky terrain that rewards effort with increasingly wide panoramas. Your local guide will point out the ecological richness of the park, from its stream valleys to its upland meadows, while also sharing accounts of the partisan resistance that took place in these mountains during World War II.
The trail is rated E (Escursionismo) under the Italian Federation of the Environment and Territory classification, meaning it follows clear but sometimes demanding paths. Solid footwear, adequate layering and good physical preparation are all required for a safe and enjoyable ascent.
At the summit sanctuary, a 360-degree view opens across the surrounding Apennine ridges and, on clear days, toward the Ligurian coast. The descent back to Voltaggio completes a circular route that offers a full picture of the park's diversity in a single outing.

Itinerary
The group meets in the village of Voltaggio, a small historic settlement at the foot of the Ligurian Apennines. After a brief orientation from your guide, the hike begins along the first section of the loop trail heading into the park.
The trail enters the protected area, passing through wooded valleys and alongside streams. The guide introduces the park's natural history, its flora and the wildlife that inhabits this transitional zone between the Ligurian coast and the Piedmontese plain.
The path becomes progressively steeper as you climb toward the upper ridgeline of Mount Tobbio. Views open to the south and east, and the guide shares accounts of the partisan resistance activity that took place across these slopes during the 1940s.
The route reaches its high point at the sanctuary, perched at 1,092 m. From this vantage point, a full 360-degree panorama encompasses the Capanne di Marcarolo Park, the surrounding Apennine peaks and, on clear days, the distant Ligurian coastline.
The loop descends via an alternate trail back toward the starting point, completing the circuit through varied terrain. The group returns to Voltaggio approximately six and a half hours after departure, concluding the day's hike.
