Diving in Tavolara and Molara Marine Protected Area from San Teodoro
A double-dive journey through one of the Mediterranean's most protected and biodiverse underwater sanctuaries.
Diving in the Tavolara Marine Protected Area is one of the most rewarding experiences available to certified divers visiting northeastern Sardinia. Departing from the Marina of Puntaldia aboard an 8-metre inflatable Lomac, participants explore two distinct dive sites in a single outing. The waters around Tavolara and Molara islands offer exceptional visibility and an abundance of marine life rarely found elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
An experienced dive guide leads each dive, briefing participants on dive profiles before each descent. The south wall of Tavolara and the shallows of Molara represent two contrasting but equally spectacular underwater environments. Both sites sit within a formally designated marine reserve, which contributes to the density and diversity of species encountered below the surface.
Between dives, a snack is served on board, and guides share curiosities and local legends about the Tavolara–Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area. The itinerary is flexible by design, with dive sites adjusted according to sea and weather conditions on the day. This approach ensures that each group reaches the most suitable and rewarding locations available.
Full rental equipment is included in the activity, covering wetsuit, mask, fins, tank, regulators, buoyancy control device, ballast, and a sea scooter. Additional equipment such as a diving computer or torch can be hired at the dive centre on the day of the excursion.

Itinerary
The group boards a comfortable 8-metre inflatable Lomac dinghy at the Marina of Puntaldia. Navigation of approximately 20 minutes through the Tavolara Marine Protected Area begins, with guides providing territorial context and background on the reserve.
During the navigation, the dive guide delivers the first theoretical lesson, covering the dive profile and maximum depth according to each participant's certification. Upon arrival at the south wall of Tavolara, the group stops for approximately one hour and completes a first dive of around 40 minutes.
After surfacing, participants enjoy a snack on board, which includes gluten-free and lactose-free chocolate cookies, hot tea, lemon, and cold water tea. The boat then navigates toward the island of Molara, during which the guide delivers the second dive briefing.
The group stops near Molara Island for approximately one hour and completes a second dive of around 40 minutes. This site is known for large groupers, damselfish, salps, bream, and barracuda in the shallows.
Following the second dive, the dinghy returns to the Marina of Puntaldia. Dive sites may be adjusted based on weather and sea conditions on the day of the activity.
