Gorropu Canyon Trekking from Urzulei
Descend into the deepest gorge in Europe through ancient forests and sheer limestone walls
A guided trek into Gorropu Canyon offers one of the most dramatic natural encounters available on the island of Sardinia, leading hikers through primary holm oak forest and into a gorge framed by walls rising 500 meters overhead.
The route from Urzulei follows a dirt track descending approximately 4 kilometers through stands of holm oaks and strawberry trees that escaped industrial logging in the last century. The forest canopy and Mediterranean scrubland create a sensory experience well before the canyon comes into view.
Inside the gorge, the path crosses the rocky bed of a seasonal river, navigating large white boulders shaped over centuries by water erosion. The canyon walls close in overhead, producing an atmosphere of scale and silence that is difficult to replicate elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
The return journey retraces the 4-kilometer ascent to the starting point. Hikers who prefer not to walk back uphill may arrange a jeep transfer directly at the base camp on the day of the excursion.

Itinerary
The group assembles at the designated meeting point near Urzulei village, where the guide provides a briefing on the route, safety procedures, and what to expect inside the canyon.
The trek begins along a dirt track descending approximately 4 kilometers through holm oak and strawberry tree woodland. The trail offers increasingly panoramic views as it drops toward the canyon entrance.
At the canyon mouth, the landscape transforms dramatically as sheer limestone walls rise overhead. The guide leads the group into the gorge, explaining the geological history and local ecology of the site.
The group covers approximately 2 kilometers inside the canyon, crossing large water-smoothed boulders and progressing as far as conditions allow. This section requires sure footing and is rated for experienced hikers.
After exploring the canyon interior, the group returns to the base camp area. Hikers may choose to ascend the 4 kilometers on foot or arrange an optional jeep transfer payable on site.
