Istanbul Old City Tour Full Day with Lunch
One day, seven hills, and centuries of history within walking distance of each other.
This Istanbul Old City full-day tour brings together the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Hagia Irene, and the Grand Bazaar into a single, expertly guided eight-hour journey through the heart of historic Sultanahmet.
Istanbul earned its reputation as the City on the Seven Hills for good reason. Even though Sultanahmet's landmarks appear close on a map, navigating between them efficiently calls for dedicated transport, and this tour handles that with a comfortable Mercedes Sprinter minivan that picks you up directly from your accommodation.
The day covers more than a dozen centuries of layered history, from a 6th-century Byzantine church to a 17th-century Ottoman mosque, all within the same storied peninsula where Constantinople once stood. A included lunch break gives you time to absorb what you have seen before the afternoon continues.
The pace is designed to be accessible for most travelers. You will spend meaningful time at each site rather than rushing through, and your guide provides historical context that transforms stones and domes into living stories.
Tour Highlights
Stand inside Hagia Sophia, one of the world's most celebrated architectural achievements, built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century.
Explore Topkapi Palace, the administrative and cultural heart of the Ottoman Empire, and view its imperial treasury and sacred Islamic relics.
Visit the Hippodrome, the ancient sporting arena of Constantinople, and examine four remarkable monuments spanning Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and German history.
Walk through the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, with thousands of shops across 61 covered streets.
Discover Hagia Irene, a rarely visited 6th-century Byzantine church that predates Hagia Sophia and survives intact within the Topkapi Palace grounds.
Travel in a private Mercedes Sprinter minivan with hotel pickup and drop-off, removing the guesswork of navigating Istanbul's steep, cobbled streets.
Enjoy a sit-down lunch included in the program, giving you a relaxed pause between the morning and afternoon segments of the tour.
Itinerary
Your guide meets you at your accommodation and transfers you by minivan to Sultanahmet. The first stop is the Hippodrome, the ancient chariot-racing stadium of Constantinople, where four historic monuments stand in a row: the German Fountain of Wilhelm II, the Egyptian Obelisk of Thutmose III, the Serpentine Column, and the Column of Constantine.
A short walk leads to the Sultanahmet Mosque, widely known as the Blue Mosque for its interior Iznik tile work. Built in the early 17th century, it is the only Ottoman mosque in Istanbul constructed with six minarets. Note that the mosque is closed to visitors on Fridays and is currently undergoing partial renovation.
Directly across the square stands Hagia Sophia, originally constructed as a Christian cathedral under Emperor Justinian I in 537 AD. It served as an Ottoman mosque from 1453, became a secular museum in 1935, and was reconverted to an active mosque in 2020. The building remains open to all visitors and continues to be Turkey's most visited landmark.
A sit-down lunch is included at a local restaurant, providing a comfortable break before the afternoon segment. The meal gives you time to rest and discuss the morning's highlights with your guide.
After lunch, the group moves to Topkapi Palace, the principal residence of Ottoman sultans for nearly four centuries. Inside the palace grounds you will also visit Hagia Irene, the 6th-century Byzantine church that was the second-largest place of Christian worship in Constantinople after Hagia Sophia. Both Topkapi Palace and Hagia Irene are closed on Tuesdays.
The final stop is the Grand Bazaar, a covered marketplace with over 4,000 shops spread across dozens of interconnected streets, offering carpets, jewellery, leather goods, Turkish delight, antique ceramics, and gold. The bazaar is closed on Sundays and official public holidays. After your visit, the minivan returns you to your hotel.
