Mount Nemrut Commagene Tour: 2-Day 1-Night from Istanbul by Plane
Walk among colossal stone gods at the rooftop sanctuary of an ancient kingdom, from sunrise to sunset.
The Mount Nemrut tour from Istanbul takes you to one of Turkey's most dramatic and historically layered destinations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched at 2,134 metres in the Taurus Mountains where King Antiochus I of Commagene erected monumental statues of gods and himself in the first century BCE. This two-day itinerary combines a direct flight to Adiyaman with guided visits to four major Commagene sites, including both the sunrise and sunset terraces of Nemrut itself.
The Commagene Kingdom occupied a strategic crossroads between Hellenic and Persian civilisations, and that cultural fusion is written into every stone you encounter on this tour. At the summit, colossal heads of Zeus-Oromasdes, Apollo-Mithras, Heracles-Artagnes, and the king himself rest in the open air after centuries of seismic displacement from their thrones.
The itinerary is designed to capture the mountain at its most atmospheric: a late-afternoon visit to the west terrace for sunset, followed by an early pre-dawn drive from the valley hotel to witness sunrise over the east terrace. The contrast between the two light conditions is the defining experience of the journey.
Beyond Nemrut, the route traces the broader Commagene landscape through the Karakus Tumulus, the remarkably preserved Roman-era Severan Bridge, and the hilltop ruins of Arsameia, the kingdom's former summer capital.
Tour Highlights
Stand before the iconic colossal stone heads on the east and west terraces of Mount Nemrut at sunrise and sunset.

Cross the Severan Bridge, a late Roman span over the Cendere River that has carried travellers for nearly two millennia.
Travel by direct flight between Istanbul and Adiyaman, avoiding a lengthy overland journey and maximising time at the sites.
Overnight in Kahta, the gateway town to Nemrut, positioning you for the early-morning summit ascent before other visitors arrive.
Photograph the surrounding valleys and ridgelines from the summit, offering panoramic views across southeastern Anatolia.
Itinerary Overview
Hotel pickup in Istanbul is followed by a transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Adiyaman. On arrival, your guide meets you at the airport and the tour begins after a lunch stop at a local restaurant.
The first site is the Karakus Tumulus, a funerary monument built by Mithridates II of Commagene circa 30-20 BCE for Queen Isias and two princesses. Next comes the Severan Bridge, a remarkably intact Roman bridge spanning the Cendere River, documented by archaeologists in 1883.
Arsameia offers a monumental relief of Heracles greeting King Mithridates alongside the longest ancient Greek inscription found in Anatolia. The day concludes on the west terrace of Mount Nemrut in time for sunset over the colossal statues.
After the sunset visit, the group descends to Kahta for check-in at a three-star hotel. There is time to rest and explore the valley town before the early start the following morning.
A very early hotel pickup precedes the drive back up to the east terrace of Nemrut to watch the sun rise over the stone gods. After the sunrise experience, the group returns to the hotel for rest and breakfast.
Following breakfast, a transfer to Adiyaman Airport connects to the midday flight back to Istanbul. Airport-to-hotel transfer in Istanbul concludes the tour.
