Fayoum Oasis Day Trip by Jeep from Cairo or Giza
Whale fossils, desert lakes, and Egypt's largest waterfalls in a single unforgettable day
This Fayoum Oasis private tour takes you deep into one of Egypt's most overlooked natural landscapes, combining a UNESCO World Heritage paleontological site with sweeping desert scenery, freshwater lakes, and dramatic waterfalls — all in a comfortable jeep with a knowledgeable guide.
Departing from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, you travel roughly 150 km southwest to reach Wadi Al-Hitan, known globally as Whale Valley. The site holds hundreds of well-preserved fossils of ancient whales, representing a critical chapter in the story of how these mammals transitioned from land to sea.
The journey continues through Wadi El Rayan, a protected reserve spanning over 1,759 square kilometres. Here you will find man-made lakes fed by agricultural drainage, sulphur springs, and the largest waterfalls in Egypt, separating the upper and lower lakes of the reserve.
A stop at the Watermelon Valley and the Magic Lake rounds out the afternoon, with time for sandboarding on the surrounding dunes before lunch at a local restaurant.

Itinerary
Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel early in the morning. The drive southwest takes approximately two hours through the outskirts of Cairo into the Fayoum Governorate.
Arrive at the UNESCO-listed paleontological site where fossilised skeletons of archaeoceti whales are embedded in the desert floor. Your guide explains the evolutionary significance of the site and what the preserved stomach contents reveal about these ancient animals.
Stop at the Watermelon Valley to photograph the rural scenery before continuing to the Magic Lake, a vivid freshwater lake overlooking expansive sand dunes. Sandboarding is available here for those who wish to try it.
A sit-down lunch at a local restaurant is included mid-tour. This gives you time to rest before the afternoon section of the itinerary.
Explore the two-lake reserve of Wadi El Rayan, formed by agricultural drainage from the Fayoum basin. Walk to the viewpoint above Egypt's largest waterfalls, which connect the upper lake to the lower lake, and take in the sulphur springs along the southern shore.
Your driver returns you to your hotel in Cairo or Giza, completing the full-day circuit. Arrival time is approximately nine hours after departure.
