El Minya Day Tour from Cairo: Tell Al Amarna and Bani Hassan
Follow the Nile south to the lost capital of a pharaoh who changed the ancient world.
This El Minya day tour from Cairo takes you well beyond the standard tourist circuit, deep into Middle Egypt where the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten once built an entirely new capital city on virgin desert ground. The sites visited here receive a fraction of the visitors that Luxor and Giza attract, offering a rare sense of discovery in an ancient landscape.
Tell Al Amarna, known in antiquity as Akhetaten, was conceived and completed in just a few years during the 14th century BC. Akhenaten abandoned the traditional gods of Egypt and devoted his reign to the worship of the sun disk, the Aten, making this city the theological and political centre of his short-lived revolution. After his death, the city was deliberately erased from history, leaving its ruins largely undisturbed across the east bank of the Nile.
The journey to Bani Hassan adds another dimension to the day, presenting painted rock-cut tombs that span the Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom periods. These tombs contain some of the most vivid scenes of daily life, wrestling, trade, and ceremony found anywhere in Egypt, all carved into the limestone cliffs above the Nile Valley.

Itinerary
An air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your Cairo hotel for the drive south along the Nile toward El Minya. The journey covers approximately 250 kilometres and takes around four hours through the agricultural heartland of Middle Egypt.
On arrival near El Minya, you board a motor boat to cross the Nile to the east bank, where the ruins of Akhenaten's capital city spread across the desert plain. This short river crossing sets the scene for one of Egypt's most historically charged sites.
Your guide leads you through the remains of Akhetaten, including the Royal Tomb, the Small Tombs of the Nobles, and the outlines of temples and palaces. The site conveys the extraordinary ambition of a pharaoh who attempted to reshape Egyptian religion within a single reign.
The tour continues to the clifftop necropolis of Bani Hassan, where 39 rock-cut tombs overlook the Nile Valley. Several tombs are open to visitors and feature painted scenes that document wrestling techniques, hunting expeditions, trade caravans, and everyday activities from the Middle Kingdom period.
After the visits are complete, you return to the vehicle for the four-hour drive back north to Cairo. Drop-off is at your hotel or a central agreed location in the city.
