Benagil Cave & Praia da Marinha Boat Tour from Carvoeiro
Sail through 20 million years of Atlantic-sculpted rock along one of Europe's most celebrated coastlines.
This Benagil cave boat tour takes you along the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Algarve, from Praia do Carvoeiro to the iconic sea cave at Benagil and beyond to the rock arches of Praia da Marinha. The 90-minute journey covers some of the most photographed coastal scenery in Portugal.
The caves and grottos lining this stretch of coastline were carved by Atlantic waves over roughly 20 million years. Sunlight filters through natural openings in the cliff faces, creating shifting colour plays inside each chamber that are difficult to describe and almost impossible to replicate in a photograph.
Beyond Benagil, the route continues to Praia da Marinha, consistently ranked among the ten most beautiful beaches in Europe and among the top one hundred worldwide. Seen from the water, its layered rock arches and stacks take on a scale that is simply not visible from the beach itself.
Tour Highlights
Enter the Benagil sea cave, described by international media as one of the most remarkable natural cathedrals on earth.

Travel on a small boat limited to ten passengers, equipped with next-generation automatic life jackets and full passenger risk coverage.
Tour Itinerary
The tour departs from Praia do Carvoeiro, a sheltered bay beach recognised among Europe's finest. After a safety briefing and equipment check, the boat heads west along the base of the cliffs.
The first section of the route passes notable formations including A Boneca and Algar Seco. Several of the seventeen principal caves are entered here, where the interplay of light and rock is most concentrated.
The boat enters the Benagil cave, the centrepiece of the tour, through its ocean-facing opening. Nearby, the Caldeira a Vapor grotto shelters the remains of a sunken steam vessel from which it takes its name.
Continuing along the coast, the route passes the Alfanzina Lighthouse and the white-sand coves of Vale Covo and Praia do Carvalho. These beaches are largely inaccessible by land, making the sea view the only practical way to appreciate them.
The tour concludes at the rock arches and layered limestone stacks of Praia da Marinha, seen from the water. The boat then returns to Praia do Carvoeiro, completing the 90-minute circuit.
