Taiyuan and Pingyao City Break, Private Tour
Four days through ancient walls, dynastic heritage, and the living culture of Shanxi province.
This Taiyuan and Pingyao private tour brings together two of Shanxi province's most historically significant destinations across four carefully structured days. From the Fen River landscapes of Taiyuan to the UNESCO-listed streets of Pingyao, the itinerary covers temple complexes, merchant compounds, and ancient city walls at a relaxed, very easy pace.
Shanxi province occupies a central place in Chinese cultural history, and its capital Taiyuan reflects that depth through monuments that span centuries of dynastic change. The city's setting along the Fen River provides a natural backdrop for sites such as Jinci Temple, which has stood at the foot of Xuanweng Mountain since antiquity.
Pingyao Ancient City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves the architectural and commercial legacy of Ming and Qing dynasty China in rare completeness. Its grand city wall, traditional courtyards, and artisanal streetscapes offer a direct encounter with a way of life that has largely disappeared elsewhere in the country.
Tour Highlights
Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province, set along the scenic valley of the Fen River with a history stretching back over 2,500 years.
Jinci Temple, one of the most prominent temple complexes in Shanxi, featuring classical gardens and the revered Hall of the Holy Mother.
Qiao's Family Compound, an outstanding example of traditional northern Chinese merchant architecture showcasing intricate wood, brick, and stone carvings.
Pingyao Ancient City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its exceptionally well-preserved city wall and Ming-Qing urban fabric.
Shuanglin Temple, housing more than 2,000 painted clay statues dating from the 12th to 19th centuries, widely described as a museum of coloured sculpture.
Authentic Shanxi cuisine served at local restaurants throughout the journey, providing a genuine taste of regional Chinese gastronomy.
Fully private transfers and a dedicated guide throughout, ensuring flexibility and personal attention at every stage of the tour.
