Beijing in Four Days: Forbidden City, Great Wall and the Soul of an Ancient Capital
A private journey through imperial palaces, mountain walls and living hutong streets
This Beijing private tour guides you across four thoughtfully structured days, balancing landmark visits with genuine free time to absorb the rhythm of one of Asia's most layered cities. From the gate of the Forbidden City to the stone parapets of Mutianyu, every day offers a distinct and memorable perspective on Chinese history and culture.
Beijing holds more than five centuries of imperial memory within its ring roads, and this itinerary is built to make that history accessible without overloading your schedule. The moderate pace means you walk meaningful distances at historic sites while still returning to your hotel with energy to spare for independent exploration.
The tour operates as a fully private experience, meaning transfers, guides and timed entry are arranged exclusively for your group. There are no shared coaches, no waiting for other travellers and no fixed meal sittings beyond the included breakfasts.
A dedicated free day on day three gives you genuine choice: wander the city independently, or select from two structured optional tours covering Hutong culture and tea ceremony, or Taoist temple practice and classical calligraphy.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the Forbidden City, the world's largest and best-preserved imperial palace complex, home to 24 emperors across the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Hike the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, widely regarded as one of the most scenic and best-maintained stretches, with panoramic views over the Yanshan Mountains.
Arrive with a private airport transfer and a representative greeting, removing the stress of navigating an unfamiliar megacity on day one.
Optional tea house visit where you can sample varieties of Chinese tea and learn about the cultural traditions surrounding this centuries-old practice.
Optional Chinese calligraphy lesson following a visit to the Summer Palace, offering a hands-on encounter with one of China's classical art forms.
Optional Hutong rickshaw ride through the old quarter of Beijing, including a visit to a local family home for an authentic neighbourhood perspective.
Optional Taoist temple morning session where resident priests introduce the principles and movements of Tai Chi and the fundamentals of Feng Shui.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
A representative meets you on arrival at Beijing Capital International Airport and escorts you directly to your hotel by private vehicle. The remainder of the day is free, giving you time to rest after your flight or take a first walk through the streets of the capital at your own pace.
After breakfast, your guide collects you at around 08:00 for a visit to the Forbidden City, where approximately ninety minutes are spent exploring its ceremonial halls and inner gardens. The group then travels northeast for roughly two hours to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, where two and a half hours of walking time allow you to take in the mountain scenery and the wall's remarkable state of preservation. You return to the hotel by approximately 19:00.
The full day is yours to spend as you choose, whether relaxing at the hotel or exploring independently. Optional Tour A covers a Hutong rickshaw ride, a local family visit, the Temple of Heaven and a tea house session. Optional Tour B visits a Taoist temple for a morning class, continues to the Summer Palace and concludes with a Chinese calligraphy lesson.
Breakfast is served at the hotel before you check out and transfer to the airport for your onward or return flight. The private transfer ensures a straightforward end to the tour.
