From Marrakech: 3-Day Sahara Tour to the Erg Chebbi Dunes
Cross the High Atlas, explore ancient kasbahs, and sleep beneath the stars in the Moroccan Sahara.
This 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech takes travelers through some of southern Morocco's most remarkable landscapes, from the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains to the towering orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. Each day brings a new layer of Moroccan heritage, geology, and culture into focus.
The route winds through UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou, the Valley of the Roses, and the dramatic Todra Gorge before arriving at the edge of the Sahara near Merzouga. A camel trek through the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset leads to a traditional Berber camp, where dinner is served under the stars and live drum music fills the desert air.
On the return leg, travelers pass through the same iconic landscapes with fresh perspective, arriving back in Marrakech by early evening on day three. The pace is relaxed and accessible, making it suitable for a wide range of travelers with no prior desert experience required.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified Berber village with centuries of history and Hollywood film credits.
Drive through the Valley of the Roses and the Tinghir Oasis, two of Morocco's most fertile and scenic corridors in the pre-Saharan south.
Visit the Todra Gorge, where limestone cliffs rise up to 300 meters on either side of a narrow canyon carved by the Todra River.
Ride a camel through the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, watching the light shift across Morocco's highest sand dunes as the desert cools.
Spend a night at a Berber desert camp, with a traditional Moroccan dinner, campfire, and live music performed by local hosts.
Cross the Tizi Ntichka mountain pass through the High Atlas, one of Morocco's most scenic and winding mountain roads.
Stop at Erfoud, historically significant as a gateway for trans-Saharan trading caravans and known for its date market and fossil heritage.
Itinerary
Depart Marrakech early and cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi Ntichka pass, with stops along the way. Visit the UNESCO-listed Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou before continuing to Ouarzazate and Kasbah Taourirte. Drive through the Valley of the Roses in the afternoon and arrive in Tinghir for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, follow the road of 1001 Kasbahs to the Tinghir Oasis, then take a minor road along the river to the Todra Gorge for free time among the towering cliffs. Continue through Erfoud toward Merzouga, where a camel caravan awaits at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Ride camels through the color-shifting dunes as the sun sets behind the horizon, arriving at the Berber camp as darkness falls. Enjoy a Moroccan dinner under the open sky beside a campfire, followed by traditional music played on drums by local hosts.
An early camel ride returns travelers to the main road, where the vehicle begins the long drive back to Marrakech. Lunch is taken along the route as the journey passes once more through the Valley of the Roses and across the High Atlas, with arrival in Marrakech around 8 PM.
