Brașov began as a German settlement in the 12th century, in the valley at the foot of Tâmpa mountain. Its medieval wealth came from crafts and commerce, and its German, Hungarian and Romanian communities have all left their mark on the town.
The Black Church
The town's landmark is the Black Church, raised over almost a hundred years from the end of the 14th century; in October 1542 it held the first Lutheran service in Transylvania.

A base for Bran and Râșnov
Many Bran Castle trips start in Brașov: the castle is 30 km (19 miles) away, and buses leave Bus Station No. 2 for Bran every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour at weekends.
Râșnov is about 15 km (9 miles) from Brașov. Its fortress itself is closed for rehabilitation; for now only its garden can be visited.
