A guide to the different ways of reaching Bran Castle in 2027, from a short trip out of Brașov to multi-day routes that take in the rest of Transylvania, with the hours, tickets and Halloween dates the castle's own site lists.

Bran Castle has worn many hats over the centuries: a fortress on the eastern border of Transylvania, a customs house, a royal residence, and now a museum. At the foot of the hill, on its western side, the old customs post still stands, a reminder that this was a trading checkpoint long before it became a tourist destination. Queen Marie later turned the castle into a genuine home, hosting family, artists and visiting dignitaries here rather than keeping it for ceremony alone.

In 1920 Brașov gave the castle to Queen Marie of Romania, who made it her favourite residence.

The short answer

From Brașov, a guided half-day tour visits Râșnov Fortress and Bran Castle.
  • Where: Bran Castle stands at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains, 30 km (19 miles) from Brașov.
  • How to go: From Brașov, join a guided tour, or travel independently by bus from Brașov's Bus Station No. 2.
  • Time needed: Tours from Brașov that include Bran run from about 4 hours and 30 minutes to 5 hours and 30 minutes; the multi-day routes last 7 days or 4 days.
  • Best time: The castle keeps longer opening hours from 1 April to 1 November than in the winter months.
  • What changed: In 2026, the castle's Halloween event runs from 24 October to 1 November, and no guided tour takes place at the castle during that period.

The whole world refers to Bran as Dracula's Castle, but the castle's own information tells a more careful story. Here is what the different Bran trips actually include, along with the practical questions about hours, tickets and getting there that often get left out.

Our picks

  • Travellers based in Brașov with a few hours free: Brașov: a guided visit to Bran and Râșnov
  • Travellers who want a fuller day out of Brașov that goes beyond the castle alone: Brașov: a day combining Bran with the Saxon fortified churches
  • Travellers building a longer Transylvania itinerary: Multi-day routes that include Bran as one stop among several

The trips

Brașov: a guided visit to Bran Castle and Râșnov Fortress

From central Brașov, the tour goes first to Râșnov Fortress and then to Bran Castle, where a guide leads the way through the Gothic-furnished rooms and preserved chambers. Râșnov Fortress itself is closed for rehabilitation; for now only its garden can be visited. Between 24 October and 1 November 2026, during the castle's Halloween event, no guided tour takes place inside, so this is worth keeping in mind if those dates fall in your trip. After the guided tour of the castle, there is free time on the grounds. Entrance fees to the castle are at your own expense.

Brașov: a day combining Bran Castle with the Saxon fortified churches

This trip also starts in central Brașov, heading first to Bran before turning to the fortified churches at Hărman and Prejmer. An English-speaking guide stays with the group throughout, explaining the history behind each stop. Here too, the entrance fee to Bran Castle is paid on-site rather than included.

Multi-day Transylvania routes with Bran as one stop

Two longer itineraries fold Bran Castle into a wider circuit. A seven-day guided tour begins with a transfer from Bucharest Airport to Sibiu and travels on from Sibiu to Brașov, visiting Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress and Peleș Castle together on one full day. A four-day guided tour instead departs from Cluj-Napoca and covers the Turda Salt Mine, Bâlea Lake and the Transfăgărășan road alongside Bran.

What the rules mean for you

Pack light: the castle asks visitors to keep luggage to a minimum because of enhanced security. Animals other than service animals are not allowed inside the castle or on the paths leading to it, and smoking is not permitted in the castle or the Royal Park. Children up to 5 years old get in free. Check the castle's hours before you go, since they change between the warmer months and the winter.

The rules in full

From 1 April to 1 November, Bran Castle opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am (09:00) and on Mondays from noon (12:00), with last entry at 7 pm (19:00); from 2 November to 31 March the last entry is at 6 pm (18:00). Animals are not allowed in the castle or on the paths leading to it, except service animals; smoking is forbidden in the castle and the Royal Park; and visitors are asked to keep luggage to a minimum because of enhanced security. Children up to 5 years old enter free. Besides the Standard ticket, the castle sells a Royal Tour Plus Fast Pass, with priority access on a separate lane to the castle entrance and entry to the Torture Rooms and the Time Tunnel, and a Guided Royal Tour Plus Fast Pass, which adds a guided tour in English or Romanian every hour, on the hour.

What to expect

Count Dracula is a fictional character from Bram Stoker's novel, and Stoker never visited Romania; Bran is called Dracula's Castle because it is the only castle in Transylvania that matches his description. Vlad the Impaler is linked to Bran through the old trade route over the pass, but it is not known whether he ever conquered the castle, since no written documents attest it. Bran Fortress itself dates from a privilege granted to the city of Brașov on 19 November 1377. In 1920 the people of Brașov gave the castle to Queen Marie of Romania; it became a museum in 1956 and was returned to the heirs of Princess Ileana of Romania in 2006. What the tours actually offer, then, is a real medieval fortress with a layered history as a trading post, a royal residence and a museum, alongside the literary legend rather than instead of it.

When not to book

If a guided tour inside the castle matters to you, avoid the Halloween event dates, since none takes place then.

From 1 April to 1 November the last entry is at 19:00, and from 2 November to 31 March at 18:00.

Before you go

  • Tour length: Trips from Brașov that include Bran run from about 4 hours and 30 minutes to 5 hours and 30 minutes in total, covering travel time and other stops, not just the castle itself.
  • Opening hours: The castle's opening hours and last entry times are listed with the visiting rules above.
  • Getting there without a tour: Trains from Bucharest run only as far as Brașov. From there, buses to Bran leave from Bus Station No. 2 every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour at weekends, stopping in the centre of Bran near the castle's main entrance.
  • Ticket paid separately: On some tours the Bran Castle entrance fee is paid at the castle rather than included in the price, so check this before you go; other, longer tours include it.
  • What to bring: Keep luggage to a minimum because of enhanced security, and leave pets at home, since animals other than service animals are not allowed inside the castle or on its approach paths.
  • Halloween dates: In 2026 the castle's Halloween event runs from 24 October to 1 November, with no guided tour taking place at the castle during that period.

Questions travellers ask

Is Bran Castle really Dracula's Castle?

Not in a historical sense: Count Dracula is a fictional character from Bram Stoker's novel, and Stoker himself never visited Romania. Bran is called Dracula's Castle because it is the only castle in Transylvania that matches the novel's description. Vlad the Impaler is linked to the castle through the old trade route over the pass, but it is not known whether he ever actually conquered it, since no written documents confirm this.

How do you get to Bran Castle from Bucharest?

Trains from Bucharest run only as far as Brașov, so you continue from there. From Brașov's Bus Station No. 2, buses to Bran run every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour at weekends, stopping in the centre of Bran near the castle's main entrance. By road, the castle's own site gives the full journey from Bucharest as about 160 km (99 miles) and 2.5 hours.

How far is Bran Castle from Brașov?

Bran Castle sits at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains, 30 km (19 miles) from Brașov.

What are Bran Castle's opening hours?

From 1 April to 1 November, the castle opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am (09:00) and on Mondays from noon (12:00), with last entry at 7 pm (19:00). From 2 November to 31 March, the last entry moves earlier, to 6 pm (18:00). It is worth checking these hours before planning a visit, since they shift between the warmer and colder months.

What is the Fast Pass at Bran Castle?

The Fast Pass is a ticket type sold directly by the castle, separate from any tour. The Royal Tour Plus Fast Pass gives priority access on a separate lane to the castle entrance, plus entry to the Torture Rooms and the Time Tunnel, while the Guided Royal Tour Plus Fast Pass adds a guided tour in English or Romanian every hour, on the hour.

Is there a Halloween event at Bran Castle?

Yes, in 2026: the event, called The Legend of Dracul, runs from 24 October to 1 November. From 24 to 30 October 2026 the castle sells New Moon tickets for a daytime Halloween tour; on 31 October the New Moon tour runs from 9 am (09:00) to 5 pm (17:00), and in the evening three packages, Blood Moon, Full Moon and Eclipse, combine a Halloween tour with a party; on 1 November the Blue Moon ticket is a Halloween tour designed for families. During this period, no guided tour takes place inside the castle.

Are Bran Castle tickets included in the tours?

It depends on the trip: the Brașov tour to Bran and Râșnov, and the Brașov day combining Bran with the Saxon churches, both have the Bran entrance fee paid separately at the castle. The seven-day Transylvania tour and the four-day Golden Circle tour from Cluj-Napoca both include the Bran Castle entrance fee in the package.
