Zrmanja River Canoe Safari and Rafting Adventure
Paddle through a living canyon where crystal waters meet ancient travertine waterfalls.
Zrmanja River kayaking takes you deep into one of Croatia's most dramatic karst landscapes, where clear turquoise water carves through a spectacular canyon lined with natural travertine waterfalls. Suitable for complete beginners and seasoned paddlers alike, this guided tour balances genuine wilderness with a relaxed, safe atmosphere. The experience is led by professional guides who ensure both excitement and safety at every bend of the river.
The Zrmanja and Krupa rivers rank among Europe's most scenic waterways, celebrated for their pristine water quality and the rare living travertine formations that create cascading natural barriers along the route. The canyon scenery shifts constantly as you paddle, offering towering limestone walls, lush riparian vegetation, and inviting swimming spots. This is an environment shaped over thousands of years, and paddling through it at water level gives a perspective no road or viewpoint can replicate.
Departures run daily throughout summer, making it straightforward to incorporate this excursion into a broader Croatian holiday based out of Zadar, Sibenik, or even Zagreb. Family departures with dedicated guides are available for groups travelling with children from the age of six. A premium option also exists for those who wish to extend the journey to include the celebrated Krupa River waterfall.
Equipment is fully provided, including two-person sit-on-top kayaks, life jackets, helmets, paddles, and neoprene suits for cooler conditions. When river levels are higher, large rafts replace the kayaks, so the adventure continues regardless of seasonal water conditions. Waterproof containers are supplied for cameras, snacks, and personal items.

How the Day Unfolds
Participants make their way independently to the Raftrek base in Kastel Zegarski, approximately one hour from Zadar via the Smilcic–Obrovac road. Guides welcome the group, distribute equipment, and run a safety and paddling briefing.
Everyone receives a life jacket, helmet, paddle, and — when conditions call for it — a neoprene suit and rain jacket. A short on-water orientation covers basic kayak handling before the canyon section begins.
The group launches onto the Zrmanja River and gradually paddles into the canyon, where towering limestone walls and crystal-clear water create an immediately striking setting. Guides point out geological features and local wildlife along the way.
The route passes several living travertine waterfalls — natural barriers formed by calcium carbonate deposits that continue to grow. Planned stops allow participants to swim in the pools below the falls and take in the surroundings.
Guests who book the premium departure continue to the Krupa River waterfall, one of the most photographed natural features in the region. This section adds scenic variety and additional paddling distance to the overall experience.
The tour concludes back at the Raftrek base, where participants return equipment and can dry off before the drive back. Total activity time on the water is approximately four to five hours.
