Zahara Tuna Festival Day Trip from the Costa del Sol
A laid-back Atlantic escape celebrating wild bluefin tuna and village life.
The Zahara de los Atunes Tuna Festival brings together the Atlantic coast's most celebrated ingredient and a spirited local food culture, making it one of the most distinctive day trips available from the Costa del Sol. Visitors follow the official tapas trail at their own pace, sampling creative tuna dishes across participating village restaurants. It is an unhurried, flavour-led experience with genuine local character.
Zahara de los Atunes is a small fishing village on the Atlantic side of Cadiz province, sheltered from the mass tourism that defines much of the southern Spanish coast. Its beach is wide, uncrowded by comparison, and the village retains the relaxed rhythms of a working fishing community. The bluefin tuna caught here has been prized for centuries, and the annual festival is a direct celebration of that heritage.
The Ruta del Atun is the centrepiece event, where local restaurants each create their most original tuna tapa for the occasion. Participants collect an official tapas trail guide or map on arrival, then move freely between venues, paying per tapa and optional drink as they go. There is no fixed itinerary once the group reaches the village, giving each visitor genuine freedom to explore.
Transport from multiple pickup points along the Costa del Sol makes this trip straightforward to join without a car. The route covers Torremolinos, Arroyo de la Miel, Fuengirola, and Cala de Mijas, offering broad access across the coast. The eight-hour duration allows sufficient time in the village for both the food trail and a walk along the beach.

How Your Day Unfolds
The day begins with a series of convenient pickups from Torremolinos, continuing along the coast through Arroyo de la Miel, Fuengirola Fairground, and Cala de Mijas. Passengers board at their nearest designated stop and settle in for the scenic drive west toward Cadiz province.
The group arrives in the village after crossing from the Mediterranean coast to the Atlantic side of the Costa de la Luz. The change in landscape and atmosphere is immediate, with wider skies, a different quality of light, and a noticeably quieter pace of life.
Pick up the official Ruta del Atun guide from the town hall or one of the participating venues in the village centre. The map identifies all restaurants taking part in the festival and outlines the route between them.
Move freely between the participating tapas venues, choosing the dishes and drinks that appeal most. Each tapa is paid for individually at the venue, and there is no obligation to follow any set sequence or timetable.
Between or after the tapas trail, visitors are free to stroll the village streets, browse local shops, or spend time on the Atlantic beach. The long stretch of sand is ideal for a walk or simply relaxing in the sea air.
The group reassembles for the return coach journey back along the coast, arriving at the original pickup points in the reverse order. The full day out lasts approximately eight hours from the first pickup.
