Istanbul to Seven Churches of Asia Minor — 5-Day Tour with 4-Star Hotels
Trace the footsteps of the Apostles across the ancient cities of Western Turkey
This five-day small-group journey through western Turkey combines early Christian heritage with pre-Christian antiquity, placing you face-to-face with all Seven Churches of Asia Minor — Pergamum, Thyatira, Smyrna, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, and Ephesus — as described in the Book of Revelation. Domestic flights from Istanbul to Izmir and back are included, keeping travel time efficient. A professional guide accompanies the group throughout, providing contextual depth at each site.
The itinerary covers a remarkable concentration of UNESCO-recognized and archaeologically significant locations across the Aegean and inner Aegean regions of Turkey. Participants walk marble streets in Ephesus, stand before the Altar of Zeus in Pergamum, and witness the travertine terraces of Pamukkale rising above Hierapolis. These are sites that shaped both ancient religion and early Christianity, and their physical scale continues to impress even experienced travelers.
Accommodation is in centrally located 4-star hotels throughout, with breakfast and selected dinners included. The small-group format by minibus ensures a more personal experience than larger coach tours, and a professional guide is present at every stop. This is a practical, well-structured tour for those who want to cover significant ground without managing complex logistics independently.
The pace is rated easy, making it suitable for most fitness levels. Each day has a clear geographical focus, moving from Izmir outward to Pergamum and Thyatira, then inland toward Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, and Hierapolis, before the coastal stretch through Ephesus and Kusadasi. The itinerary returns to Istanbul on the final morning.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Istanbul by domestic flight to Izmir. Upon arrival, a representative will meet you at the airport for a private transfer to your hotel. The evening is free for rest and orientation in Izmir.
Your guide meets you at the hotel lobby for a drive north to Pergamum (Bergama), where you visit the Acropolis, the Asklepion, the Altar of Zeus, the Temple of Trajan, and the ancient library. Continuing to Thyatira (Akhisar), you see remains of a Roman-era basilica and architectural fragments tied to the city famous for purple dyes. A panoramic drive through Smyrna completes the day before returning to your hotel in Izmir overnight.
An early departure leads to Sardis (Sart), the former Lydian capital, where you visit the Temple of Artemis, the restored gymnasium, the reconstructed synagogue, and the remnants of the Persian Royal Road. The group then visits Philadelphia (Alasehir), the only church of the seven not censured in Revelation, before continuing to Laodicea on the Lycus river. The day concludes at Hierapolis and the Pamukkale terraces, with dinner and an overnight stay at a thermal hotel.
Drive to Ephesus for a thorough tour of the ancient city, including the Library of Celsus, the Baths of Scholastica, the Temple of Hadrian, the Great Theatre, and the Basilica of St. John. The House of Virgin Mary on the Aladag Mountains is visited before a stop at the remaining columns of the Temple of Artemis. The group transfers to Kusadasi for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, the group transfers from Kusadasi to Izmir airport for the return domestic flight to Istanbul. Upon arrival in Istanbul, a representative transfers you back to your hotel. Tour services conclude at hotel drop-off.
