Orange Roman Heritage: Arc de Triomphe and Ancient Theater Walking Tour
Two thousand years of history across 2.9 kilometres, guided by audio commentary through one of Provence's most storied cities.
This Orange walking tour leads you through 19 points of interest across a 2.9 km route that connects the city's most significant Roman, medieval, and Renaissance landmarks. The Arc de Triomphe and the Ancient Theater, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, anchor an itinerary rich in historical context. An audio guide delivers 19 commentaries to bring each site to life as you walk.
Orange has preserved an exceptional concentration of Roman monuments in southern France, and this route is designed to make sense of them in sequence. From the northern gateway marked by the Arc de Triomphe to the towering stage wall of the Ancient Theater, each stop builds on the last to tell the story of the city of Arausio. The route also includes medieval churches, a former hospital, a Roman forum, and a fine arts museum housed in a 16th-century mansion.
Beyond the Roman period, the tour traces Orange through its years as a Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion and its identity as the capital of the Principality of Orange-Nassau. The city's theatrical heritage is equally present, with both an ancient Roman theater and a 19th-century municipal theater classified as historical monuments appearing along the same route.
The walk is rated easy and takes approximately one hour and ten minutes to complete, making it well suited for a half-day visit or as the centerpiece of a full day in Orange. The flat sections through the town center are straightforward, and the audio commentary runs automatically at each numbered stop.

Route Overview
The route leads up the main avenue to the impressive Arc de Triomphe, built in the 1st century AD at the northern entrance of the Roman city of Arausio. Arriving here by foot mirrors the experience of travellers on Via Agrippa nearly two thousand years ago.
The walk passes through Place de la République, home to a statue of Raimbaud II of Orange, and Place George Clémenceau, a square designed in the 14th century as a gathering place for the city's residents. Both squares retain their role as the social heart of Orange.
The former Cathedral of Our Lady of Nazareth served as the episcopal seat of Orange until 1801 and remains a listed historical monument. Nearby, the 19th-century municipal theater, built by a collaborator of Charles Garnier, is also classified and sits alongside the ancient Roman theater on the same route.
The ruins of the ancient Roman Forum are visible from the street, surrounded by a footbridge that allows visitors to observe the remains at close range. Directly opposite stands the Museum of Art and History, installed in a 16th-century mansion built for Georges Van Cuyl.
The tour culminates at the Ancient Theater, whose stage wall rises 37 metres and dominates the surrounding streets. This UNESCO-listed monument is the most celebrated site in Orange and the endpoint of the audio-guided itinerary.
