The hike begins on the Chemin du Canapé, a historic stepped trail carved into the rocky terrain of the Sainte-Baume massif. Once traveled by medieval pilgrims and Compagnonnage apprentices completing their Tour de France, the path offers an immediate sense of layered history. The forest canopy provides shade as the trail winds steadily upward toward the cliffs.

Arriving at the Grotte Sainte-Madeleine, visitors enter a cave embedded in the cliffs where, according to tradition, Mary Magdalene lived in prayer for her final years. The site has been a pilgrimage destination since at least the 5th century and underwent its most recent restoration between 2017 and 2019. The atmosphere is one of quiet reverence, framed by views across the Provençal landscape.

The ascent continues to the Col du Saint-Pilon, passing the modest Chapel of Saint-Pilon perched on a ridge above the cave. From this high point, panoramic views extend across Provence and toward the Mediterranean coastline. The col is a natural resting point and a rewarding vantage for the surrounding massif.

After descending from the heights, the group gathers for lunch at the Hôtellerie Sainte-Baume, a historic hospitality house that has welcomed pilgrims and travelers for centuries. The menu draws on Provençal traditions, featuring roasted meats, seasonal vegetables, and regional wines or herbal teas. The setting is calm and restorative, well suited to the rhythm of the day.

The final stop is the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, a Gothic structure considered the largest of its kind in Provence. The basilica houses the relics of Mary Magdalene, displayed in an intricately decorated crypt that draws pilgrims from across Europe. The interior architecture, spanning several centuries of construction, provides a fitting conclusion to a day shaped by history and spiritual heritage.
