Berlenga Island Boat Trip: Discover Portugal's Atlantic Nature Reserve
Crystal-clear waters, historic fortresses, and untouched nature just off the Portuguese coast.
A Berlenga Island boat trip from Peniche offers one of Portugal's most rewarding coastal escapes, combining dramatic Atlantic scenery with a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve that remains one of the country's best-kept natural treasures.
Departing from the Marina de Peniche, the crossing brings you to an archipelago shaped by millennia of wind and sea. The island's striking granite cliffs, translucent blue waters, and resident seabird colonies create a landscape that feels genuinely remote despite being less than twelve kilometres from the mainland.
Once ashore, visitors have between two and a half to three and a half hours to explore freely, depending on the season. The island rewards walkers, swimmers, and history enthusiasts in equal measure, making it a versatile destination for different travel styles.
The crossing itself, made aboard one of four available vessels including a catamaran, semi-rigid boats, or a sport yacht, is part of the experience. Calm bays and sea caves become visible from the water before you even set foot on the island.
Tour Highlights
Navigate crystalline Atlantic waters on a round-trip boat crossing from Peniche Marina to Berlenga Island.
Explore sea caves with a glass-bottom launch, revealing the underwater world beneath the island's cliffs.
Visit the 17th-century Forte de Sao Joao Baptista, a historic fortress standing on its own islet linked by a narrow causeway.
Relax on one of the island's sheltered beaches, with some of the clearest and cleanest water found along the Portuguese coast.
Walk the island's pedestrian trails through a protected natural reserve home to rare seabirds and endemic flora.
Experience a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve that is strictly managed to protect its fragile ecosystem.
