Río Celeste Nature Hike: Turquoise Waters and Rainforest Trails
A four-hour walk through one of Costa Rica's most visually striking natural landscapes.
The Río Celeste Hike guides visitors through the lush interior of Tenorio Volcano National Park, where the river's famously vivid turquoise color and a dramatic waterfall create a setting unlike anywhere else in Central America. The trail moves through dense rainforest, offering both natural spectacle and genuine wildlife encounters along the way.
The hike follows a well-maintained path that winds beneath a canopy of emerald-green vegetation, passing through terrain shaped by volcanic activity and sustained by the region's consistent rainfall. The contrast between the deep greens of the forest and the pale blue of the river is one of the defining visual experiences of this route.
A local guide accompanies the group throughout, pointing out wildlife and explaining the geological and ecological processes behind the river's distinctive color. The phenomenon results from the mixing of two separate streams at a point known as Los Teñideros, where minerals suspended in the water create the turquoise appearance.
This tour is suitable for travelers who are reasonably active and comfortable walking on natural terrain. The difficulty is rated moderate, meaning some uneven ground and inclines are involved, but no technical skills are required.
