Pirro Ligorio is credited with the design, and the colossal figures, some carved directly from the bedrock, range from leaning houses to gaping ogre heads large enough to walk inside. The garden resists easy categorization and has fascinated historians, artists, and travelers since its rediscovery in the 20th century.

The afternoon moves to Terme dei Papi outside Viterbo, a spa whose papal patronage dates to 1235 under Gregory IX. The main outdoor thermal pool covers two thousand square meters and is fed by the Bullicame spring at 58 degrees Celsius, cooling slightly in the pool to a temperature that is therapeutic without being uncomfortable. Dante and Michelangelo both referenced these waters, giving the site a cultural depth that matches its physical appeal.
