Private Combo Day: Lake Myvatn, Dettifoss, Selfoss and Godafoss Waterfalls Tour
One full day. Four iconic natural wonders. Complete flexibility for your private group.
This private Lake Myvatn and Dettifoss day tour brings together the most remarkable geological and natural highlights of North Iceland, from cascading waterfalls and volcanic craters to geothermal lagoons and tectonic rift caves, all guided by an experienced local expert at your own pace.
Departing from your chosen pick-up point in Akureyri or Lake Myvatn, this nine-hour private tour follows a flexible itinerary designed around your group's interests. Because the tour is exclusively yours, stops and timing can be adapted on the day to suit your preferences.
The route covers a concentrated stretch of Iceland's volcanic north, where the landscape shifts between active geothermal fields, ancient lava formations, and powerful glacial rivers. Few single-day routes in Iceland pack this level of geological and scenic variety into one journey.
Tour Highlights
Stand beside Dettifoss, recognised as Europe's most powerful waterfall, located within Vatnajokull National Park.
Soak in the Myvatn Nature Baths, a geothermal lagoon set among lava fields with mineral-rich silica waters.
Visit Godafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, one of Iceland's most historically significant and visually stunning cascades.
Explore Dimmuborgir lava formations, the dramatic Dark Castle landscape used as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
Walk around Skutustadagigar pseudocraters and take in panoramic views across the Lake Myvatn basin.
Witness the bubbling mud pools and natural steam vents at Hverir on the slopes of Mount Namafjall.
Enter Grjotagja cave, a geothermal rift straddling the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
Itinerary Overview
The tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel, guesthouse, or airport in Akureyri or Lake Myvatn. The first stop is Godafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, a broad horseshoe-shaped cascade on the Skjalfandafljot River with deep historical and cultural significance in Iceland.
Arriving at the Lake Myvatn area, the tour takes in Skutustadagigar pseudocraters, which were formed by steam explosions when lava flowed over wet ground. The views across the lake and surrounding lava fields from this site are among the most distinctive in northern Iceland.
The Dimmuborgir lava formations offer a maze of pillars, arches, and caves shaped by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. Nearby, the Grjotagja cave sits directly on the rift between two tectonic plates, and the Hverir geothermal area presents an active landscape of mud pools and fumaroles at the foot of Mount Namafjall.
The Myvatn Nature Baths provide an opportunity to relax in a geothermal lagoon fed by mineral-rich water, set against a backdrop of lava fields. Please note that entrance fees to the Nature Baths are not included in the tour price.
The tour continues to Vatnajokull National Park for a visit to Dettifoss, where glacial meltwater from the Jokulsa a Fjollum river drops over a basalt ledge in a display of raw force. The nearby Selfoss waterfall, a shorter but equally striking cascade upstream, is also included in the route.
Following the final waterfall visit, the guide accompanies the group back to the original pick-up point in Akureyri or Lake Myvatn. A stop at a local restaurant or cafe for food and refreshments is included during the tour.
