Porto Cooking Class with Jorge and Isabel
A hands-on Portuguese cooking experience in a welcoming family home at the heart of Porto.
This Porto cooking class invites guests into the home of Jorge and Isabel for a genuine, hands-on introduction to traditional Portuguese cuisine. Over four hours, you will prepare, cook, and share a full meal made from scratch using authentic local ingredients and time-honored techniques. The experience blends culinary learning with genuine hospitality and cultural conversation.
From the moment you arrive, the family sets a relaxed and friendly tone with a welcome drink and a brief introduction to the house, the menu, and what to expect. The session is designed to feel like an afternoon with friends rather than a formal class, with plenty of room for questions, laughter, and improvisation along the way.
The menu travels across the breadth of Portuguese home cooking, from crispy Pataniscas de Bacalhau and a fresh salad to a choice of meat or fish main course and the iconic Pastel de Nata made entirely from scratch. Dishes can be adjusted to suit dietary needs or preferences, ensuring every guest finds something to enjoy at the table.
By the time you sit down to eat, the table is set with the results of your own hands. Jorge and Isabel use the meal as a moment to share stories about Porto, local customs, and the history behind the dishes you have made together.

How the Experience Unfolds
Jorge and Isabel greet guests with a welcome drink and aperitif. They introduce the family, the house, and the full menu from starters to dessert, covering the ingredients and utensils you will be using.
Guests chop onion, parsley, and garlic before combining flour, eggs, beer, and seasoning in a mixing bowl. Small portions are shaped and fried to create this classic Portuguese cod fritter.
The group prepares a meat or fish main course, with options that may include seafood or octopus depending on preference. Side dishes such as potatoes, rice, or a fresh vegetable salad are seasoned and assembled together.
Using a traditional method, guests shape puff pastry into baking molds and fill them with a freshly made cream. The pasteis are prepared to the sound of music, bringing a relaxed and celebratory feel to the session.
Once cooking is complete, everyone gathers at the table with glasses poured to enjoy the full spread. Jorge and Isabel share stories about Porto life, local traditions, and interesting facts about the city and country.
