Ponte 516 Arouca & Passadiços do Paiva: Guided Day Tour from Porto
Walk above the gorge, follow the river, and discover one of northern Portugal's most extraordinary natural landscapes.
The Ponte 516 Arouca and Passadiços do Paiva guided tour takes you deep into the Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark, where a record-breaking suspension bridge and an award-winning riverside boardwalk trail combine into a single unforgettable day. Departing from the centre of Porto, this experience requires no prior hiking experience and suits most active travellers aged 6 and above.
The tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide who shares insights into the geology, biodiversity, and cultural heritage of the Paiva River gorge throughout the journey. With optional lunch at a riverside restaurant and a stop in the town of Arouca on the return, the day covers far more than two iconic landmarks. It offers a genuine introduction to the landscapes, flavours, and character of this corner of northern Portugal.

Itinerary Overview
The group departs from Largo Actor Dias, beside the Fernandine Walls in central Porto. Hotel pick-up is available as an optional add-on, with the van making its way toward the Serra de Arouca.
Upon arriving in the village of Alvarenga, the group meets the local guide. A brief orientation covers the Geopark's history, safety guidelines, and what to expect from the trail ahead.
The group walks from Alvarenga along historic village paths to reach the 516 Arouca bridge. The crossing takes you 175 metres above the Paiva River gorge, passing over the Aguieiras waterfall. For those uncomfortable with heights, a 4x4 shuttle to the opposite bank is available at no extra cost.
The trail follows wooden boardwalks and stone stairways along the full length of the Paiva gorge. The guide points out wildlife, river rapids popular with rafting groups, hidden waterfalls, and the dramatic cliffside scenery that has earned the trail its international reputation.
At the end of the trail, an optional traditional lunch is served at a riverside restaurant, with regional dishes, drinks, and vegetarian or vegan options available on request. The return journey includes a stop in Arouca to sample local pastries before the van returns to Porto.
