Passadiços do Paiva: Self-Guided Walking Tour from Porto
Leave the city behind and walk one of Portugal's most celebrated river gorge trails inside a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The Passadiços do Paiva boardwalk trail winds 8.7 kilometres along the dramatic cliffs of the Paiva River gorge, and this small-group tour makes the journey from Porto seamless — comfortable transport, entry tickets, and a riverside lunch all taken care of.
Arouca Geopark, recognised by UNESCO, frames the entire route with extraordinary natural heritage. Walkers pass verified geosites spanning ancient fault lines, cascading waterfalls, and glacially sculpted rock faces that tell 500 million years of geological history.
The trail connects the river beach of Areinho to the beach of Espiunca, passing through the quieter Praia do Vau midway — a natural pause point beside crystal-clear Paiva waters. After the walk, a stop in Arouca town offers a taste of the region's celebrated convent sweets before the return drive to Porto.

Itinerary
The group departs from Largo Actor Dias in central Porto, or from your hotel if that option was selected at booking. The drive to Arouca takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, with scenic mountain roads for the second half of the journey.
The group begins the 8 km trail at Praia do Areinho, the northern trailhead. The opening section crosses the first geosites and introduces the iconic zigzag stairways and elevated viewpoints over the Paiva gorge.
Roughly halfway through the route, the trail descends to Praia do Vau river beach — geosite G30 — a natural stopping point for water, rest, and views of the surrounding cliffs and waterfalls including the Cascata das Aguieiras.
The trail ends at Praia da Espiunca, where the group enjoys an included lunch at the Bar da Praia. The leisure area sits beside the Paiva River and provides a calm setting to rest after the walk.
Before returning to Porto, the group visits Arouca for a short break. The town is known for its Benedictine monastery and its traditional convent sweets, which can be purchased at local shops.
The van returns to Porto, arriving at approximately the time indicated in the booking confirmation. Journey duration is subject to local traffic conditions.
