Itinerary Overview
The tour begins at the Acueducto de los Milagros Park, where you face one of the most important archaeological sites in Mérida. The adjoining Albarregas River Park provides a wide green setting from which the full scale of the aqueduct's remaining arches can be appreciated.
The route continues to the Roman Circus, identifiable by its oval footprint, then to the main archaeological ensemble containing the ruins of the amphitheater and the Roman theater. These sites represent the densest concentration of Roman monuments in the city.
Walking into the city center, you reach the Temple of Diana standing within the remains of the ancient forum. From there the route leads to Plaza de España, the historic main square laid out during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, flanked by the Co-Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor.
The tour continues to the fortified walls of the Alcazaba before reaching the Roman bridge, from which views extend across the Guadiana River to the Lusitania bridge and the island park. The statue of Emperor Augustus marks the point where his story is told in depth.
