Kayak Naturaliste — Var, France

Kayak Naturaliste aux Iles des Embiez et Cap Sicié

A full-day paddle through a protected Mediterranean archipelago and dramatic coastal cliffs, adapted to the best conditions of the day.

This kayak naturaliste Iles des Embiez experience takes you through one of the most carefully preserved corners of the French Mediterranean coast, combining natural heritage, marine biodiversity, and raw coastal scenery over eight hours on the water.

The tour departs from the Plage du Brusc and circles the Embiez Archipelago, where the Grand Ile — historically linked to Paul Ricard — hosts a car-free village, a working port, and a respected oceanographic institute, all within a protected natural zone of sandy coves and remarkable underwater habitats.

When westerly winds or the Mistral make the Embiez route unsuitable, the departure shifts to Plage de Fabrégas near Les Sablettes, and the route follows the base of Cap Sicié — cliffs rising to 350 metres — past wild beaches and toward the twin islets known as Les Deux Frères. Both routes are considered among the finest sea kayak outings in the region.

Tour Highlights

Paddle around the protected Embiez Archipelago, a designated natural zone with crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life.

Discover the Grand Ile, a car-free island with a historic oceanographic institute and an authentic Mediterranean village atmosphere.

Observe the Ile du Grand Rouveau lighthouse, a classified historic monument rising above the open sea.

Explore wild, sandy calanques ideal for a midday picnic lunch, sheltered from the main tourist routes.

Benefit from a flexible dual-route system that adapts to weather conditions, ensuring the best possible experience regardless of wind direction.

Navigate beneath the towering 350-metre cliffs of Cap Sicié and discover secluded beaches inaccessible by land.

Spot the spectacular twin islets of Les Deux Frères on the Cap Sicié alternative route, a dramatic natural landmark of the Var coastline.

Itinerary

1
Departure — Plage du Brusc or Plage de Fabrégas

The guide assesses conditions and confirms the route. Equipment is distributed and a safety briefing is given before launching from the beach.

2
Crossing to the Embiez Archipelago (or Cap Sicié approach)

On the Embiez route, paddlers cross toward the archipelago and begin exploring its outer shores, sandy coves, and calm turquoise waters. On the Cap Sicié route, the group heads south along the coastline toward the base of the cliffs.

3
Exploration — Grand Ile, Grand Rouveau or Cap Sicié Cliffs

The Embiez route includes a circuit of the Grand Ile and a passage near the Grand Rouveau lighthouse. The Cap Sicié route follows the base of dramatic sea cliffs past inaccessible wild beaches.

4
Lunch Break in a Calanque

The group lands on a sandy beach inside a sheltered calanque for a midday break. Participants bring their own lunch and have time to swim or rest.

5
Continuation — Twin Islets or Return Circuit

On the Cap Sicié route, the group paddles to the twin islets of Les Deux Frères before turning back. On the Embiez route, the return covers additional sections of the archipelago coastline.

6
Return to the Departure Beach

Kayaks are returned to the beach and equipment is collected. The guide offers a debrief and answers questions about the sites visited.
