Hatta City Tour: Dam, Hills, Heritage Village & Kayak
Rugged peaks, ancient villages, and open water — one unforgettable day in the Hajar Mountains.
The Hatta City Tour from Abu Dhabi takes you deep into one of the UAE's most scenically dramatic destinations, where Hajar Mountain landscapes meet centuries of Emirati heritage. Over more than ten hours, guests explore shimmering dam waters, restored historic sites, and an adrenaline-charged adventure hub in a single private journey.
Hatta sits roughly two and a half hours from Abu Dhabi, tucked inside the Hajar Mountains as a UAE enclave that borders Oman. Despite its proximity to the city, the region feels worlds apart, offering cool mountain air, winding rocky terrain, and a quieter pace of life that draws both residents and visitors seeking a genuine break from the urban landscape.
This tour is structured as a private experience for groups of one to six people, giving participants the flexibility to move at their own pace across each stop. The itinerary balances active water-based activity, historical exploration, wildlife watching, and optional adventure sports into a coherent day that works equally well for families, couples, and small friend groups.
Guests should come prepared for a full day outdoors across varied terrain. The tour is rated moderate in difficulty, meaning light physical activity is involved at most stops, though nothing requires specialist fitness. Comfortable footwear, sun protection, and water are strongly recommended for the duration.
Tour Highlights

Itinerary
The day begins at the iconic Hatta Dam, where guests can rent a kayak, pedal boat, or water bike to explore the reservoir at their own pace. Those who prefer a guided experience can join a boat tour, during which the driver shares background on the area's history, geography, and cultural significance. The surrounding mountain peaks and striking blue water make this one of the most photographed locations in the UAE's interior.
Perched along the mountainside, Hatta Hill Park was established in 2004 and remains a popular destination for both residents and tourists. Guests can walk the jogging tracks, use the sports facilities, or simply find a shaded spot for a picnic. The tower at the highest point of the park offers sweeping views across the Hajar Mountains and the village below.
One of the oldest settlements in the UAE, the Heritage Village presents carefully reconstructed stone architecture, ancient water wells, two watchtowers, a traditional majlis, and a protective fort. Inside, a museum displays old photographs of local life alongside tools, weapons, and traditional crafts including a basket-weaving demonstration. The adjacent Al Sharia palm farm provides context on the falaj irrigation system, a centuries-old water management method that continues to be studied and admired.
A short walk from the Heritage Village, Swan Lake is a peaceful freshwater pond that attracts a wide range of local birdlife including kingfishers, herons, Indian silverbills, and swans. Guests are encouraged to observe quietly, bring binoculars if available, and avoid feeding the wildlife to preserve the natural habitat. The setting also serves as a pleasant spot for a family picnic before continuing the tour.
The tour includes a scheduled 40-minute stop near local restaurants, giving guests time to eat and rest at their own expense. Lunch is not included in the tour package. This break falls mid-tour to allow guests to recharge before the afternoon activities.
The final major stop is Hatta Wadi Hub, an outdoor adventure center set within the mountain terrain. Activities available include zorbing, human slingshot, axe throwing, archery, climbing walls, trampolines, rope courses, and free-fall jumps, as well as kayaking and guided hiking trails for those preferring a more relaxed pace. Guests choose their preferred activities on arrival, making this stop adaptable to different energy levels and interests.
