Fujairah City, Khorfakkan, Fort, Museum, Dam & Friday Market Tour
A journey through ancient forts, mountain landscapes, coastal wonders, and rare geopolitical curiosities on the UAE's East Coast
This Fujairah East Coast Tour takes you across some of the most historically rich and scenically dramatic terrain in the UAE, blending heritage sites, mountain vistas, and a genuinely rare geographical phenomenon into a single, well-paced day. The route connects Khorfakkan's coastal drama with the quiet grandeur of Fujairah's interior, covering ground that few visitors ever reach.
From a waterfall engineered into a natural cliff face above a Gulf of Oman corniche to a 16th-century fort that survived Wahhabi occupation and a British naval bombardment, the day moves through layers of history that feel both tangible and surprising. Each stop is chosen for its depth, not just its visual appeal.
The trail difficulty is rated easy, making this tour accessible to families, photography enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the region's geography and tribal heritage. The combination of coastal, mountain, and archaeological settings ensures the day never feels repetitive.
The enclave visit at Madha and Nahwa adds a dimension few tours anywhere in the world can offer: you will physically pass through Omani territory to reach a patch of UAE soil that is completely surrounded by Oman, a counter-enclave recognised as one of only a handful of such curiosities on earth.
Tour Highlights
Explore a 16th-century fort at Khorfakkan with a history that includes Wahhabi occupation and British naval bombardment, now carefully restored for visitors.
See the Khorfakkan Waterfall, an engineered cascade set into natural rock above the Gulf of Oman corniche, inaugurated in 2020 by the Ruler of Sharjah.
Visit Madha and Nahwa, a rare counter-enclave where UAE territory sits entirely within Oman, one of only a few such border anomalies in the world.
Browse the Friday Market at the foot of the Hajar Mountains, where clay pots, woven carpets, wooden furniture, and fresh grilled corn await.
Ascend to Al Suhub Rest House at roughly 600 metres above sea level for a full 360-degree panorama of the Hajar Mountains and the Gulf of Oman coastline.
Tour the Fujairah Museum's antiquities halls, including an ostrich egg dating to around 2,500 BC and artefacts recovered from sites at Al Badiyah and Dibba.
Walk the 730-metre promenade at Al Rafisah Dam alongside a seasonal mountain lake formed by the waters of Wadi Shie flowing down from the Hajar range.
Tour Itinerary
The tour opens at the Khorfakkan Corniche, where a striking man-made waterfall built in 2020 cascades down the natural rock face of the Hajar Mountains above the Gulf of Oman. The engineering integrates seamlessly with the rugged terrain, producing a dramatic visual that sets the tone for the day ahead.
A mountain road leads up to Al Suhub Rest House, a circular saucer-shaped structure at approximately 580 to 600 metres elevation, offering unobstructed 360-degree views of sea and mountains. From there, the route descends to the Khorfakkan Fort, whose original towers date to the mid-16th century and whose walls absorbed both Wahhabi occupation and British artillery before restoration work returned it to its current state.
The Fujairah Museum presents heritage halls covering traditional fishing, weaving, agriculture, and pottery alongside antiquities halls displaying arrowheads, carnelian beads, jewellery, and an ostrich egg dated to roughly 2,500 BC. Nearby, Al Badiyah Mosque, believed to originate from around 1446 CE, stands as one of the oldest mosques in the UAE, its four unequal domes supported by a single central pillar inside a 53-square-metre stone structure.
Positioned against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains on the road between Fujairah and Khorfakkan, the Friday Market offers traditional clay pots, woven baskets, Persian-style carpets, handmade wooden furniture, and freshly grilled corn. It is a practical and colourful stop for souvenirs and a genuine sense of local commerce.
Al Rafisah Dam was originally constructed in the 1980s for flood control and water storage on Wadi Shie; a recent renovation added a 730-metre palm-lined promenade and hiking access toward Al Suhub at around 600 metres. The adjacent Wadi Shees is a seasonal mountain ravine stretching roughly 8.5 kilometres, home to the small village of Shees and linked to the Naqbiyin tribal heritage of the area.
The final major stop is the Madha-Nahwa enclave complex, where Omani and UAE territories interlock in the Hajar Mountains. Nahwa, a Sharjah enclave of roughly 40 houses with a clinic, school, and police post, sits entirely within Omani Madha, creating one of the rarest border configurations on the planet.
