3-Day Donkey Trekking in the Gulf of Orosei from Dorgali
Walk ancient mule tracks, camp on wild beaches, and discover the hidden soul of Sardinia alongside your four-legged companions.
This Gulf of Orosei donkey trekking journey combines rugged coastal scenery, traditional Sardinian hospitality, and genuine wilderness over three challenging days between Dorgali and Baunei. Travelers walk stretches of the legendary Selvaggio Blu route, one of Europe's most dramatic coastal paths, without the need for full technical equipment.
The route unfolds along ancient mule tracks, through dense woodland, deep valleys, and limestone gorges known locally as codule, before descending to turquoise coves accessible only on foot or by sea. Donkeys carry the majority of the luggage, making the physical challenge more manageable while preserving the authentic feel of slow travel through this protected landscape.
Accommodation alternates between a tent pitched directly on the sand at Cala Luna and a bungalow at Cala Sisine, placing participants at the heart of two of the Gulf's most celebrated beaches. Meals draw on local zero-kilometer produce and regional specialties, giving the experience a strong sense of place at every stage.
Tour Highlights
Reach Cala Luna and Cala Sisine, two of Sardinia's most celebrated and secluded beaches, on foot along ancient coastal paths.
Walk sections of the iconic Selvaggio Blu, widely regarded as one of the most scenic coastal treks in the Mediterranean.
Traverse dense woodland, dramatic limestone valleys, and elevated viewpoints reaching up to 500 meters above the Gulf of Orosei.
Rest at a traditional cuile, the stone shepherd's hut used by mountain herders, for an authentic midday lunch break in the highlands.
Travel light with donkeys carrying the bulk of the group's gear, allowing trekkers to focus on the landscape rather than the load.
Sleep under a tent on the sands of Cala Luna for a rare overnight experience at a beach otherwise reached only by sea or trail.
Explore hidden caves and small secret beaches near Baunei on the final day before returning to the starting point by transfer.
Itinerary
After meeting your guide and donkeys near Dorgali, the group departs along an ancient mule track toward the coast. The afternoon brings arrival at Cala Luna, where a dinner prepared from local zero-kilometer products is followed by a night under canvas directly on the beach.
The morning begins with a swim and a walk along the shoreline before the group heads back into the mountains around 9:30. The path climbs through woods, valleys, and codule gorges to around 500 meters, with a midday stop at a traditional cuile shepherd's hut for lunch. The afternoon descent leads to Cala Sisine, where dinner at the beach restaurant and an overnight stay in a bungalow complete the day.
The final stage follows the trail toward Baunei, passing through caves and visiting small hidden coves along the way. On arrival at the Golgo plateau resort, a transfer brings participants back to the original departure point in Dorgali, concluding the three-day circuit.
