Pico do Fogo Volcano Hike from Chã das Caldeiras
Climb Cape Verde's highest peak through lava fields and reach the sky above the clouds.
This guided Pico do Fogo volcano hike takes you from the crater floor of Chã das Caldeiras to the summit of Cape Verde's tallest mountain at 2,829 meters, passing through a volcanic landscape shaped by one of the Atlantic's most active volcanoes.
Starting at an altitude of 1,730 meters, you walk among fig, vine, apple, and pear trees before the terrain gives way to raw lava fields left by the island's most recent eruption. Your guide adjusts the pace to suit your fitness level and shares context about the local geology and the eruption history that reshaped the valley below.
The 3 to 4-hour ascent is physically demanding, rated challenging, and rewards those who complete it with 360-degree panoramic views that can stretch across the other islands of the Cape Verde archipelago on clear days. The descent follows a different rhythm, sliding down loose lava ash before returning to São Filipe.

Itinerary
Your guide or driver collects you from your accommodation in São Filipe and transfers you to the Fogo Natural Park. The drive takes you through the island's dramatic landscape as you ascend toward the caldera.
You meet your hiking guide at the base village of Chã das Caldeiras, a settlement within the volcanic caldera. Your guide introduces the route, the geology of the area, and the history of the eruption that buried much of the village under lava.
The hike begins through orchards and gardens before entering the raw volcanic terrain of hardened lava. Over 3 to 4 hours, you climb steadily toward the summit, with your guide adjusting the pace to match your group's fitness level.
At the highest point in Cape Verde, you pause to take in panoramic views stretching across the archipelago on clear days. A picnic break allows you to rest and absorb the landscape before beginning the descent.
The return route takes you down the steep ash and cinder slopes in a fast, sliding descent that contrasts sharply with the careful upward climb. This section is often highlighted as one of the most memorable parts of the experience.
Once back at Chã das Caldeiras, you board your return transfer to São Filipe. The full excursion, including transport, takes approximately 7 hours.
