Costa Vicentina: The Wild Atlantic Coast of Southwest Portugal
Where rugged cliffs, protected landscapes, and ancient moorish history meet the open Atlantic.
This full-day excursion takes you along the Costa Vicentina, one of the last stretches of truly wild coastline in Western Europe, sheltered within a designated Natural Park that spans nearly 80 kilometres of dramatic shoreline between Vila Nova de Milfontes and Burgau.
The Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina is a protected area recognised for its exceptional ecological value and its raw, unspoiled character. Unlike the developed resort coastline to the east, this region retains the atmosphere of a landscape shaped entirely by wind, salt, and ocean.
Departing from the Algarve, the route heads north of Lagos into terrain that feels genuinely remote. Sweeping cliff-top views, wide sandy beaches with powerful Atlantic swells, and hilltop villages with centuries of history define the journey throughout the day.
The tour concludes at Cabo de Sao Vicente, the southwestern tip of continental Europe, where generations of sailors once watched the horizon before setting out into the unknown. The cape remains one of the most atmospheric and historically layered viewpoints on the Iberian Peninsula.

Itinerary Overview
Pickups are available from a selection of coastal towns including Olhos de Agua, Albufeira, Praia da Gale, Armacao de Pera, Carvoeiro, Praia da Rocha, Portimao, Alvor, Lagos, and Praia da Luz. The group departs heading northwest toward the Costa Vicentina.
The first stops bring the group to two of the most celebrated beaches on this coastline. Both beaches sit within the natural park boundary and offer views of dramatic Atlantic-facing cliffs and wide, wave-swept sands favoured by surfers and walkers alike.
The tour continues into the town of Aljezur, a quiet hillside settlement dominated by the ruins of its tenth-century Arab fortification. From the castle walls, visitors can take in sweeping views across the Algarve interior and toward the Atlantic coastline.
Time is given to appreciate the protected landscape of the natural park itself, with its characteristic mix of heathland, cliff-top vegetation, and untouched beach ecosystems. The guide provides context on the conservation status and natural heritage of the area.
The final major stop is at the cape, where sheer cliffs drop into the Atlantic and a functioning lighthouse marks the end of the European continent. The site has been considered sacred and strategically vital since antiquity, and on a clear day the views extend far out to sea.
The group retraces the route south along the coast, returning passengers to their respective pickup locations in the Algarve. The full day tour lasts approximately seven hours.
