Begin at the grand Place du Palais, dominated by the immense Palace of the Popes — the largest Gothic structure from the Middle Ages in Europe. Opposite the palace stands the Hotel des Monnaies, a reminder of the era when Avignon functioned as an independent papal city-state.

Avignon Cathedral sits directly beside the palace, serving as the seat of the Archbishop of Avignon. Nearby, the Musee du Petit Palais and the tranquil hilltop park Le Jardin des Doms offer a welcome pause with views over the Rhône.

Head toward the river to view the celebrated Pont Saint-Bénézet, the famous bridge whose remaining arches have defined Avignon's skyline for centuries. The surrounding 14th-century stone defensive walls encircle the city and provide a dramatic backdrop for the route.

Place de l'Horloge is a wide pedestrianized square shaded by plane trees, lined with café terraces and local life. From there the route winds down to Rue des Teinturiers, a cobblestone lane tracing a narrow channel of the Sorgue river.

Place Pie hosts Les Halles d'Avignon, the covered market hall open daily until early afternoon, with its celebrated living green wall facade. A short walk leads to Place Saint-Pierre, a shingle-cobbled square anchored by a mid-14th-century collegiate church.

The Calvet Museum occupies an 18th-century mansion and holds an extensive permanent collection, while the nearby Lapidary Museum displays classical Greek, Etruscan, Roman, and Gallo-Roman works. The tour concludes along Rue de la Republique, the city's main artery leading back toward the city walls.
