e-Scavenger Hunt Bilbao: Explore the City at Your Own Pace
Unlock Bilbao's hidden stories through a smartphone-powered adventure designed for curious explorers of all ages.
The e-Scavenger Hunt Bilbao transforms a city walk into an interactive game, guiding participants through iconic landmarks and lesser-known corners using a free smartphone app. Players answer location-based questions, complete search assignments, and navigate with GPS at whatever pace suits them best. It is a practical and genuinely entertaining way to get acquainted with one of Spain's most architecturally distinctive cities.
The experience is fully self-directed, meaning there are no fixed departure times and no guide to keep up with. Participants log in to the game app after booking and can start, pause, or stop the tour entirely on their own schedule. This flexibility makes it particularly well suited to families, couples, and groups who prefer exploring on their own terms.
The route takes players past world-class modern architecture, centuries-old religious buildings, lively squares, and riverside landmarks that together tell the story of Bilbao's remarkable transformation. The app layers in historical facts and cultural context at each stop, so participants leave with a genuine understanding of the city rather than just a collection of photographs.

Route Overview
The tour begins at the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 1997 as a landmark of contemporary architecture. Just outside the entrance stands Maman, a nearly nine-metre-tall spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois, and the famous floral puppy covered in seasonal blooms.
Walking along the Nervion River, players pass under the La Salve Bridge, which historically marked the point where returning sailors first glimpsed the Basilica of Begona. Nearby, the twin Isozaki Atea towers, designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, rise as the tallest residential buildings in the Basque Country.
The route enters the Casco Viejo, or Old Town, where the Church of San Anton stands beside the river on a site that has anchored the neighbourhood since medieval times. Nearby, the Cathedral of Santiago was originally a parish church built in the 14th and 15th centuries and only elevated to cathedral status in 1950, while the Old Bridge traces its origins to before 1318.
The neo-baroque Arriaga Theatre, completed in 1890 by architect Joaquin Rucoba and named after composer Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga, anchors the edge of the Old Town. The adjacent Nueva Plaza offers a colonnade of bars and shops, while the Flemish-style Chavarri Palace near Moyua Square represents some of the finest civic architecture in the city centre.
Moyua Square was conceived in 1876 as the elliptical centrepiece of the Gran Via de Don Diego Lopez de Haro, from which eight avenues radiate outward. A short walk away, the Concordia railway station, colloquially known as the Santander Station, presents an ornate Art Nouveau facade that stands in striking contrast to the modern city around it.
The final section invites players to take the historic Artxanda Funicular up to the hilltop park, where the Mirador de Artxanda delivers a panoramic view over the entire Bilbao basin. A walk through the park rounds off the route before participants make their way back down into the city.
