Costa Verde ATV Adventure: Mines, Dunes and Wild Valleys from Arbus
A half-day off-road journey through volcanic mountains, golden dunes and the echoes of Sardinia's mining heritage.
This Costa Verde ATV excursion offers a rare chance to explore one of Sardinia's most untouched coastlines and its dramatic hinterland by quad bike, tracing a route that connects ancient mining settlements with sweeping desert landscapes.
The itinerary unfolds across a varied terrain of volcanic slopes, river valleys, historic industrial sites and coastal dunes. Participants ride from the historic borough of Montevecchio down to the legendary sand dunes of Piscinas, one of Europe's largest coastal dune systems, before looping back through the ruins of Ingurtosu and Brassey laveries.
Along the route, the landscape shifts from dense Mediterranean scrubland to open sandy expanses, offering a sense of isolation and raw natural beauty that few standard tours reach. The mining heritage of the area adds a layer of cultural depth, with structures from the 19th and early 20th centuries still standing amid the vegetation.
The excursion is rated moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for riders with basic off-road confidence. Each ATV can carry up to two persons, so the experience works equally well for solo adventurers and pairs.

Itinerary
The excursion begins in Arbus, heading toward the historic mining village of Montevecchio. The borough retains much of its original industrial architecture and offers an evocative introduction to the region's heritage.
The route continues through a stretch of road across the lower flanks of Monte Arcuentu. This extinct volcanic massif shapes the landscape of the entire area and provides a dramatic backdrop for the ride.
Riders reach the dunes of Piscinas, one of the most remarkable natural features in Sardinia. The route then continues to the Rio Naracauli, a river whose waters have long been associated with the region's mining activity.
The group moves on to the old ore-washing facilities of Brassey and Ingurtosu, two of the most significant industrial heritage sites along the Costa Verde. Their ruins stand as a testament to the scale of mining operations that once defined the region.
The excursion ends with a pass through Gennamari, a small inland settlement that completes the circuit through Costa Verde's lesser-known territory. The return to Arbus follows shortly after.
