Itinerary Overview
Begin on the broad square that divides the old town from the newer districts of Ajaccio. Historically used as a military training ground, the square is now a central orientation point for the route.
Walk the principal artery conceived by Napoleon I and turn onto the street named after Cardinal Fesch, whose statue, eponymous museum and imperial chapel cluster at the far end.
Reach the palm-lined square overlooked by the statue of Napoleon and its four lion fountain, then step into the narrow lane leading to the house where the future emperor was born on 15 August 1769.
Descend to the old port and walk the citadel pier for an unobstructed view across the three basins of the Gulf harbor. The Baroque Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the chapel of Saint-Erasme lie along this coastal stretch.
Continue along the bay past the Casino — the only one in Corsica — to Saint-François beach and the seafront terrace of Place Miot, an ideal spot for wide-angle views of the Mediterranean.
Conclude at Place Austerlitz, home to the monument paying tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte, before admiring the ornate facade of Cyrnos Palace, built for a Scottish traveler who fell under the spell of Ajaccio in 1870.
