Grand Tour of Croatia: 8-Day Self-Drive Adventure
From Dubrovnik's ancient walls to the waterfalls of Krka, discover the highlights of the Dalmatian coast at your own pace.
This 8-day self-drive tour of Croatia takes you through the country's most celebrated destinations, blending UNESCO-listed old towns, dramatic coastal scenery, and protected national parks into a single well-paced journey. The itinerary is designed for independent travelers who prefer the freedom of the open road alongside the reassurance of pre-arranged logistics.
The route begins in Dubrovnik and winds northward through Split, Trogir, Sibenik, and Biograd na Moru before looping back along the Adriatic coast. Each stop offers a distinct character, from Roman imperial ruins to medieval port towns and canyon-carved hinterlands.
National parks feature prominently throughout the trip. Krka's layered waterfalls and Paklenica's rugged gorges provide natural counterpoints to the urban heritage of the coastal cities, while the Kornati archipelago and Telascica Nature Park are within easy reach for those who want to explore further off the main road.
Tour Highlights
Walk the medieval walls of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former seat of the Republic of Ragusa, with its concentration of Baroque palaces and historic churches.
Explore Split's living old town, built within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, one of the best-preserved examples of late Roman architecture anywhere in the world.
Visit Krka National Park and its celebrated series of waterfalls and travertine barriers set within a deeply incised river canyon in the Dalmatian hinterland.
Hike the gorges of Paklenica National Park, a dramatic limestone landscape in the southern Velebit mountains popular with walkers and rock climbers.
Discover Trogir, a compact island-city whose dense collection of Romanesque and Renaissance monuments earned it UNESCO recognition in 1997.
Use Biograd na Moru as a base for day trips to the Kornati islands and Telascica Nature Park, two of the most scenically striking areas of the central Dalmatian coast.
Stop in Zadar to see its Roman forum, early medieval churches, and the celebrated Sea Organ, an architectural installation built into the city's seafront promenade.
