Huangshan City Break: Yellow Mountain, Ancient Villages and Granite Peaks

Five days among the granite peaks, twisted pines and heritage villages that shaped Chinese artistic tradition for centuries.

This Huangshan private tour guides you through one of China's most celebrated landscapes, from the mist-wrapped summits of Yellow Mountain to the UNESCO-listed ancient villages of Hongcun and Xidi nestled in the valleys below. Designed for independent travellers who value flexibility, the itinerary balances structured sightseeing with genuine free time to explore at your own pace.

Yellow Mountain has drawn poets, painters and pilgrims for more than a thousand years. Its peculiarly shaped granite peaks, gnarled Huangshan pines and seasonal cloud seas have made it a defining image in classical Chinese art and a reference point in landscape photography to this day.

Beyond the mountain, the villages of Hongcun and Xidi preserve Ming and Qing dynasty architecture in extraordinary condition. Stone lanes, whitewashed walls, carved wooden screens and tranquil moon ponds create an atmosphere that feels genuinely removed from modern life.

The tour operates as a fully private experience. Your guide, driver and all included transfers are dedicated exclusively to your group, giving you the flexibility to move at a comfortable pace and linger where the landscape demands it.

Tour Highlights

Ride the Yungu cable car to the summit plateau of Mt. Huangshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its geological and aesthetic significance.

Walk among the iconic Huangshan pine trees and granite formations at Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Flower-Scattering Valley and Lion Peak.

Explore the West Sea Grand Canyon area around Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion, one of the most dramatic viewpoint corridors on the mountain.

Visit Hongcun Village, a 900-year-old settlement arranged in the shape of an ox, celebrated for its Anhui-style residential architecture and ornamental waterways.

Discover the North Sea Scenic Area, the central hub of Yellow Mountain where the most photographed peaks and rock formations are concentrated.

Photograph Flying Rock and Bright Summit, two of the mountain's most recognizable geological landmarks, both within the World Heritage boundary.

Explore Xidi Village, a second UNESCO-listed settlement where timber residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties open their carved interiors to visitors.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Arrival in Huangshan

A private representative meets you at Huangshan Airport or the railway station and transfers you directly to your city hotel in approximately 30 minutes. The remainder of the day is entirely at your leisure, offering a first opportunity to walk the streets of this southern Anhui city.

2
Yellow Mountain: Cable Car, Granite Peaks and West Sea Canyon

After hotel pickup at 8:30, a two-hour drive brings you to the base of Mt. Huangshan. The Yungu cable car carries you to the summit plateau, where roughly two hours of walking reveal Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Flower-Scattering Valley and Lion Peak. Lunch is served at a local mountain restaurant before an afternoon session at Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion and the West Sea Grand Canyon.

3
Flying Rock, Bright Summit and North Sea Scenic Area

A morning walk of three and a half hours takes in Flying Rock and Bright Summit, two of the mountain's geological landmarks. After lunch, the itinerary moves to the North Sea Scenic Area, the central zone where Lion Peak, Shixin Peak, Stalagmite Peak, the Refreshing Terrace and the Monkey Gazing at the Sea viewpoint are all accessible. The Yungu cable car returns you to the base in the mid-afternoon for the drive back to Huangshan city.

4
Free Day in Huangshan or Optional Village Excursion

A full day at leisure in the city allows you to explore independently or rest at the hotel. Alternatively, an optional full-day excursion visits Hongcun Village and Xidi, two UNESCO-listed ancient settlements renowned for Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, carved wooden interiors and picturesque waterways. Is the Hongcun and Xidi village excursion included in the base price?
