Guiyang & Kaili Cultural Experience: 4-Day Private Tour

Minority traditions, ancient opera, and the world's largest radio telescope in one unforgettable journey.

This Guiyang Kaili cultural tour brings together the living heritage of Guizhou Province, from hand-crafted opera masks in Old Han Village to the silver jewellery markets of Kaili and the engineering marvel of FAST. The pace is relaxed, the distances manageable, and every stop is chosen for genuine cultural depth rather than spectacle.

Guizhou has long been one of China's least visited provinces despite being home to dozens of distinct ethnic minority communities. The Miao people of the Kaili region have preserved embroidery, batik, and brocade traditions for centuries, and their calendar of more than 120 annual festivals keeps those traditions alive and public rather than museum-bound.

Between the two cities a short hike through the paddy fields of Fanpai offers a rare ground-level look at a farming landscape that has changed little in generations. The wooden houses of Fangzhao village sit inside that landscape without any tourist infrastructure, which makes the visit feel more like a conversation than a performance.

Tour Highlights

Old Han Village preserves the costumes and customs of troops who settled here from Nanjing centuries ago, and its residents still perform Ground Opera in hand-made masks.

Ground Opera mask-making is a living craft in the village. Visitors can watch the process up close and optionally take part in a hands-on session.

The paddy-field hike between Fanpai and Fangzhao village passes through an unspoiled farming system that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

Kaili is the cultural capital of the Miao minority, celebrated for silver jewellery, embroidery, brocade, batik, and paper cutting, as well as more than 120 annual local festivals.

FAST, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, is the largest astronomical telescope in the world and took 22 years to complete. Its unique technology is used to observe black holes.

The Astronomical Experience Hall and Astronomical Museum adjacent to FAST provide interactive context for what you have just seen in the valley.

Meals at local restaurants throughout the trip introduce regional Guizhou cuisine, known for bold sour and spicy flavours that differ markedly from better-known Chinese cooking styles.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Arrival in Guiyang & Old Han Village

A representative meets you at Guiyang Airport or Railway Station and drives you directly to Old Han Village, approximately 90 minutes away. You will walk through the village, watch a private Ground Opera performance by local amateur performers wearing hand-made masks, and learn how those masks are crafted before returning to Guiyang for check-in and a free evening.

2
Drive to Kaili via Fanpai Hike

After breakfast, the group departs for Kaili with a lunch stop in Taijiang. From there, a one-hour hike through green paddy fields leads to Fangzhao village, where an intact maze of old wooden houses and a traditional farming system await. The evening is free to explore Kaili independently.

3
FAST Telescope & Return to Guiyang

A three-hour drive from Kaili brings you to the FAST site for a two-hour guided visit that includes the Astronomical Experience Hall and Astronomical Museum. After lunch at a local restaurant, the group drives back to Guiyang, arriving in the early evening with dinner at leisure.
