Xiamen City Break: Gulangyu Island, Piano Museum & Cultural Highlights
Four days discovering the art, architecture, and heritage of China's Garden on the Sea.
This Xiamen private city break guides you through four days of cultural discovery in one of Fujian Province's most celebrated destinations, combining guided excursions with meaningful free time to explore at your own pace.
From the colonial facades of Gulangyu Island to the lantern-lit lanes of Zhongshan Road, Xiamen presents a layered identity shaped by centuries of maritime trade, overseas influence, and Southern Fujian tradition. The city earned its reputation as the Garden on the Sea through a combination of sea breezes, lush greenery, and a well-preserved historic core.
The tour is designed for travelers who appreciate depth over distance. Rather than rushing through a checklist of sites, each day builds on the previous one, allowing you to absorb the city's pace and character before moving on.
Optional full-day excursions to Quanzhou and Yongding, or a half-day visit to the Botanical Garden and South Putuo Temple, offer further context for those who want to venture beyond the city limits without sacrificing comfort or convenience.
Tour Highlights
Gulangyu Island, one of Fujian Province's most scenic areas, is a car-free enclave of colonial mansions, shaded footpaths, and sea-facing gardens accessible only by ferry.
The Piano Museum on Gulangyu Island houses the world's largest collection of historic pianos, including instruments of unusual shape and scale rarely seen outside specialist institutions.
The Historic International Settlement and Longtou Road showcase a rare streetscape where Traditional Southern Fujian, Western Classical Revival, and Veranda Colonial styles coexist on the same block.
Hi Heaven, the most distinguished cultural venue on Gulangyu Island, stages live performances of South Fujian dialect puppet shows, a regional art form with deep historical roots.
Zhongshan Road and the traditional Fish Market offer a street-level introduction to Xiamen's culinary culture, with local snacks, seafood, and handcrafted souvenirs at close range.
Sunlight Rock and Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall provide a panoramic vantage point over Gulangyu Island alongside a tribute to one of Fujian's most celebrated historical figures.
Optional excursions to Quanzhou, Yongding Tulou clusters, and Xiamen Botanical Garden allow independent customization of the itinerary based on personal interests.
Itinerary
A private transfer from Xiamen Airport or Railway Station brings you directly to your hotel in approximately 30 minutes. The remainder of the day is free for independent exploration or rest at your own discretion.
Following hotel pickup, a ferry crossing delivers you to Gulangyu Island for visits to the Piano Museum above Shu Zhuang Garden, Sunlight Rock, and Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall. The afternoon covers the Historic International Settlement, Longtou Road, and a puppet show at Hi Heaven, before a stop at Zhongshan Road and the Fish Market on the return to the hotel.
A full day at leisure allows you to revisit favorite areas or relax at the hotel. Three optional tours are available: a full-day excursion to Quanzhou including Kaiyuan Temple and the Old Town, a full-day trip to Yongding to explore the UNESCO-listed Tulou cluster, or a half-day visit to Xiamen Botanical Garden and South Putuo Temple.
