3 Days 2 Nights Merzouga Desert Tour from Fes
From the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas to the golden dunes of the Sahara and back to Fes
This Fes to Merzouga Desert tour takes travelers on a three-day overland journey across Morocco's most dramatic landscapes, from mountain villages and ancient oases to the vast sand dunes of the Sahara. The route is curated for those who want depth, not just distance, blending natural scenery with genuine cultural encounters along the way.
Departing from Fes, the journey climbs through the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through Ifrane — a town of striking European architecture — and the cedar forests around Azrou, where Barbary macaques roam freely. Lunch in Midelt, the so-called City of Apples, marks the transition between the Middle and High Atlas before the route descends toward the vast Ziz Valley, one of the largest palm oasis corridors in Africa.
Arriving in Merzouga in the late afternoon, guests settle into a traditional Kasbah for the night with a dinner accompanied by Saharan music. The second full day is devoted to exploring the desert at a comfortable pace, with options ranging from visiting the Tafilalt Oasis towns to listening to Gnawa music in Khamlia village. As the sun drops, a camel trek leads into the dunes to a Berber camp where a traditional Madfona dinner, campfire stories, and a sky full of stars await.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Pickup from your hotel or Riad in Fes is followed by a scenic drive through the Middle Atlas, stopping at Ifrane's alpine architecture and Azrou's cedar forest for a close encounter with Barbary macaques. Lunch is taken in Midelt before the route descends through the High Atlas toward the Ziz Valley oasis and onward to Merzouga, arriving in time for dinner with Saharan music at a traditional Kasbah.
The morning and early afternoon are free for self-guided exploration, including visits to Rissani and the Tafilalt Oasis, or a trip to Khamlia village for Gnawa music. As the heat subsides, a camel trek departs into the dunes toward the Berber camp, where hosts prepare a traditional Madfona meal and guests spend the night around the campfire beneath an open desert sky.
An early wake-up rewards guests with the sunrise over the sand dunes before returning to camp for a shower and breakfast. The return journey to Fes passes through Erfoud and Midelt, retracing parts of the Atlas crossing and arriving back in Fes by evening.
