Highlights of Croatia: 11-Day Self-Drive Adventure
Coastal cities, mountain parks, and medieval towns — all at your own pace along the Adriatic.
This Croatia self-drive tour takes you through eleven days of discovery, from the walled city of Dubrovnik and the Roman heritage of Split to the Ottoman-influenced lanes of Mostar and the vibrant capital Zagreb. The route blends iconic UNESCO-listed sites with quieter corners of the Dalmatian coast and the Dinaric hinterland. Freedom of movement is the essence of this journey — your rental car is your compass.
The itinerary winds through two countries, revealing contrasts that make the western Balkans one of Europe's most rewarding driving destinations. Waterfalls in Krka National Park, the canyon above Omiš, and the turquoise river Neretva in Mostar are among the natural settings that frame each stage of the route. Optional guided excursions are available at every stop for travellers who prefer a local perspective.
Accommodation is pre-arranged at each destination, so logistics are handled while the experience remains entirely flexible. Whether you linger on a Dubrovnik terrace, hike a trail in Paklenica, or browse a Zagreb market, the pace is yours to set. The self-drive format makes this tour especially well-suited to couples and small families seeking independence without sacrificing comfort.
Tour Highlights
Dubrovnik's UNESCO-listed medieval walls enclose one of the best-preserved old towns in the Mediterranean, filled with palaces, churches, and limestone streets.
Split's Diocletian's Palace, a fourth-century Roman complex, is a living neighbourhood where cafes, galleries, and apartments occupy ancient chambers.
Krka National Park offers a series of cascading waterfalls and clear river pools set within a dramatic limestone canyon, reachable from Biograd na Moru.
Mostar's 16th-century stone arch bridge, rebuilt after wartime destruction, spans the Neretva and anchors a bazaar district rich in Ottoman architecture.
Zagreb's Upper and Lower Towns present a compact city of Baroque churches, art nouveau facades, open-air markets, and a lively cafe culture.
The landscapes between destinations — Cetina Canyon, Dalmatian coastal roads, and Zagora villages — are themselves part of the experience on this self-drive route.
Optional wine and olive oil tastings in Zagreb and Split introduce travellers to Croatian varietals and regional gastronomy guided by local sommeliers.
Itinerary Overview
Arrive at Dubrovnik Airport, collect your rental car with the help of a local representative, and check in to your hotel. The afternoon and evening are free to explore the old town within the city walls, or join an optional two-hour guided city tour.
Drive north along the Dalmatian coast, passing through Sibenik before reaching Biograd na Moru, your base for two nights. From here, Krka National Park and Paklenica are both accessible, with waterfalls and canyon trails as the main draws.
Head inland toward the Croatian capital. Zagreb offers two days to explore Upper Town landmarks — St. Mark's Church, Lotrscak Tower, and the Stone Gate — as well as the Dolac market and surrounding excursions to Samobor or Zagorje castles.
Drive south to Split and spend two nights in Dalmatia's largest city. Day seven is reserved for exploring the coast, including a stop in Omis with its medieval fortresses and a visit to the World Heritage town of Trogir.
Cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina for a night in Mostar, walking the Old Bridge and exploring the bazaar. On day nine, drive back to Dubrovnik through coastal villages for a final two-night stay in the Adriatic city.
Day ten is entirely at leisure in Dubrovnik — walk the city walls, relax at the beach, or join an optional Game of Thrones excursion to Fortress Lovrijenac and Lokrum Island. On day eleven, return the car at the airport and depart.
