Founded in 1496 by Spanish conquistador Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, its planned street grid served as a model for colonial cities across Latin America, earning UNESCO inscription in 1999. The city is the historical capital of Tenerife and home to the University of La Laguna, the oldest university in the Canary Islands.
