Mondello in Sicily

Archaeological findings place human settlement in this area as far back as the Upper Paleolithic. Mondello grew from a fishing village on the northern edge of the bay. The Valdesi marsh was drained at the end of the 19th century.

Palermo serves as the capital of Sicily's autonomous region. The city came under Arab control in 831 and later became the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily. The basin around Palermo is known as the Conca d'Oro.

The promontories and nature reserves

Parts of the nature reserves established near the surrounding promontories fall within Mondello. The Capo Gallo reserve extends over nearly 586 hectares around a massif of carbonate rock. On Palermo's northern coast, Monte Pellegrino stands as a separate promontory formed of carbonate rock. Its elevation reaches 606 metres above sea level. The promontory forms the core of a nature reserve of 1,050 hectares.

Monte Pellegrino is the setting for the Sanctuary of Saint Rosalia. Saint Rosalia is Palermo's patron saint.
